Expert Q&A

By Alesia Hanson, RPh
Registered Pharmacist

When I found a cyst in my breast, my doctor told me to take vitamin E supplements. Why?

A large number of women have breast cysts, and for many, these cysts cause pain and tenderness. Many of these women – up to 80 percent – have found that vitamin E has been helpful in both reducing the size of breast cysts, as well as decreasing any pain or tenderness. Studied doses range from 400 IU to 800 IU. Vitamin A, iodine and essential fatty acids have also been used, but vitamin E appears to be the most effective and most common treatment.
