Stephanie's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

September 3, 2003

If you are tuning in for an update from Stephanie I am sorry to be the one to have to tell you that she isn’t here this week. Instead you get to hear some insane ramblings from a former Mom’s Today writer…
_______________________________________________

HELLO ALL!!

Well here I am, like it or not! I first discovered that I would be writing this entry when I stopped by to read about Stephanie and the “deadly quad ride”. She had very innocently informed everyone (except me of course) that I would be filling in while she took a well deserved holiday. So rather than let her down, here we go…

WHEN WE LAST SPOKE…

It has been a mere couple of weeks since I closed my diary at Mom’s Today and embarked on my new role in life as a mother of two. Things have sure started off with a bang! As you all know, we welcomed little Shelby Lane into our lives on June 27th. She has been an absolute joy! I had forgotten how much I enjoyed holding a baby in my arms. I missed the sweet smell of their skin, the wrinkles, the rolls, the first smiles and the teensy-tiny baby clothes. The transition from one child to two has been a bit rougher than I had anticipated…and I think I know why…

MIKE

The day after I delivered Shelby, Mike came up to the hospital to visit us. He seemed very upbeat and happy. I assumed that it was because he was now the proud papa of a baby girl and the husband of a slim, trim supermodel. (Ok, ok lumpy, frumpy mother of two…geez) But soon I discovered that there was more behind his ear to ear grin. After returning home from a tough day in the delivery room (yeah…don’t men have it rough?) he checked the messages on our answering machine. A man named Vince from a guiding company in British Columbia left a message asking Mike to return his call. As soon as his heart began beating again, Mike dialed Vince’s number and learned that he was in need of a Hunting and Recreation Guide for his camp. Long story short…Mike accepted a position with Vince, quit his job at the electrical firm, and moved to British Columbia 5 days after Shelby was born. Are you shocked? Not as much as I was I am sure! So since Shelby has been born, Mike has been home to visit twice. He couldn’t love his new job more, but….

Sooooooo…

A week after Mike moved away, I packed my entire “House from Hell” and moved in with my parents. I had to give our dog “Red” away because, well, I am not Super Woman and now I am living out of a box.

MAXWELL

In a matter of 6-weeks Maxwell’s entire world has been turned upside down.

1st – Mommy goes into the hospital for 4 days to have a baby
2nd – Mommy brings the baby home
3rd – Daddy moves away
4th – Mommy packs up all of my stuff and moves to Grandma’s house
5th – Mommy gives my dog away

If being a good parent means offering your child a stable, familiar environment to grow up in…I have completely failed! Do you want to know the funniest part though? You would never know anything had changed. Max is absolutely in love with his baby sister, he could care less that the dog is gone, and who doesn’t want to move to Grandma’s?

I am not sure if Max has actually grown as much as I think, or if he just looks massive compared to Shelby! The first day I came home from the hospital I felt like I had an infant and a teenager! When did that happen? Max has completely moved away from the baby stage and is now an official little boy. He loves anything sports related and has mastered his scooter, skateboard and bike. Max turns 3 on September 27th and I don’t have the slightest idea what to buy the child who needs nothing and has everything.

SHELBY

A little girl. I can’t believe that I have a little girl. I can remember hearing the surprise news that we had a boy when I delivered Maxwell. I thought to myself, “what the heck do I do with a boy?” and now I find myself in the same position with a girl. Although I must say…I think I am going to be VERY good at dressing her!!

Shelby gave us a bit of a scare already. On August 12th she just wasn’t acting like herself. She seemed to have a tummy ache and wouldn’t let us put her down. That evening at about 9 o’clock I took her temperature and it was a bit high so I took her into the ER. When we finally got to see the doctor he admitted her immediately and started a string on tests. After a bunch of blood work and a spinal tap they discovered that she had Viral Meningitis. I was terrified. The doctor quickly explained that Viral Meningitis was the “good” kind and that she was going to be just fine in a few days. THANK GOODNESS. She is feeling great now and is growing like a weed. She already weighs 10 pounds (which is a far cry from the 4 pounds she weighed when we left the hospital) and is growing out of clothes almost as quickly as I can buy them!! She has blue eyes and RED, curly hair!! We have no idea where that came from but it is dang cute!

NICOLE

After enduring what I call the pregnancy from hell and learning that my liver will never recover from it, I finally gave in to the doctors and had my tubes tied. I never dreamed in a million years that I would be finished with my family at 24, but I guess things don’t always work out as planned. When they got in there to do the procedure they discovered just what a beating my body had taken from my pregnancies. They had to remove one of my tubes completely and said that Shelby is an absolute miracle. I am both excited and sad that my baby making days are over. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to experience pregnancy and birth 3 times and now I get to focus on bringing my babies up the best that I can.

So that is the low down on our family! Hopefully next month we will be moving to British Columbia to reunite with Mike and my life will slowly return to a normal pace. I hope that all of you are doing wonderful! Please stop by Steph’s board and say hi!

Love as always
Nicole

THANKS STEPH!
