It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye ~ At least that’s how the saying goes, but in this case it should be ~ It’s all fun and games until someone loses and eye and an ear!! Okay, truthfully, I didn’t actually lose them, just damaged them ~ A LOT!! I suppose that I should back up a little and let you in on the whole story.
Last Saturday was beautiful, we got up and got moving around 8:30 a.m. and about 9:00 we got a call from a friend of mine (K) who wanted us to come up to the Mountains and visit her (K owns a ranch). After running around and getting stuff together we all piled into the van and headed towards her house (about 3 hours away). It was nice and cool at the Ranch when we arrived and the girls immediately headed out into the pasture to feed her baby horses. After petting the baby horses and sitting on the Mama’s for awhile, we headed back to the house where the girls jumped on the trampoline and then went “swimming” in the hot tub.
After the girls got out and dried off, Germ went around the side of the house and came back with a quad runner (4-wheel ATV), he drove it all around the “yard” and gave the girls rides. Then he and K went to the barn and got the other quad runner and brought them both back up to the house. We all decided that we were going to ride so Germ and Lexi took off on one quad and Kimmi and I jumped on the other. K took Mackenna with her and seat belted her into the Mule (Kawasaki Mule ~ which is like a big golf cart).
The ranch is rather large and has several dirt/gravel roads leading to additional pastures etc., we all took off down the main road and were racing the quads down a straight stretch of road. Lexi and Kimmi were screaming and egging us on to go faster and to beat the other “team”. K and Mackenna were following behind much slower in the Mule. We headed down another road and to the end of the property where we all met up and then decided to race back to the ranch and then go to the store and buy stuff to barbecue.
Germ and Lexi were in the lead with Kimmi and I just a few yards behind and again K and Kenna were much slower and therefore further behind in the Mule. When we got to the turn to head into another straight away, Germ and Lexi had stopped and Kimmi was screaming, “we’re gonna beat you”, we were traveling too fast and as we tried to go around the corner, the wheels caught on the gravel and we slid / slammed right into a horse fence. (Metal upright and supporting poles and steel cables across.)
Now before you really freak out, we are both okay!! I won’t go into all of the details about picking ourselves up and dusting ourselves off because it was a little bit more complicated and took much longer than that, but we are both fine!!! Notice I didn’t say unscathed!!
I have a H U G E black eye! Actually at this stage of the game it’s really more eggplant in color and starts above my left eyebrow and ends at my cheek bone. I have 15 stitches in my right ear and multiple bruises and abrasions on my right ribs and chest, left calf and arm and right hip. We spent a couple of hours in the ER and were given a clean bill of health and released the same night. Kimmi had a CT scan and was declared as good as new and somehow avoided more than a scrape on her forehead and a scratch behind her ear. THANK GOD!!! My only concern was that she was fine!! I cannot tell you how unbelievably lucky we were to have only minor injuries. I went back to the Dr. yesterday to be rechecked and received pain medication (YAY!!! ~ LOL!). I will have to go back again on Friday to have my stitches removed and hopefully by then I will not be walking like the hunchback of Notre Dame.
I know that I deserve a lecture (trust me I’ve already had a couple), so if you could refrain from another one I’d appreciate it!! (If you can’t resist, I’ll understand.) While I certainly know better than to race with my daughter on the seat in front of me on a quad with no helmet, on a private ranch in the Mountains, it didn’t seem so insane.
Next week I will be in Oregon with my best friend! Jamie and I are leaving my husband and children and heading to Oregon for a girls weekend. I’m not sure what I will do with myself for four whole days without being a Mommy or a Wife, but I’m sure that it will be fun!! I will be meeting Heather from Moms Today for Margarita’s and will certainly update about that when I get back. In my place, Nicole (formerly Moms Today) will be jumping in and updating everyone about Max and Shelby and her life as a new Mommy of two ~ don’t miss it!!!
From me and mine to you and yours ~ Stephanie
