Stephanie's Diary EntriesDiary Navigation: |
July 14, 2003
Okay, that’s it ~ I’ve been waiting for a block of time to get my diary updated and if I keep waiting, it will be Christmas or some such thing!! So I have decided to post a little entry and let you all know what has been happening around here and the reason(s) that I am slacker, a deadbeat and a loser (sigh).
Strep Throat ~
If it’s not one . . . It’s the other or in my case ~ all of them!!
My last update I think that I mentioned that Lexi had strep throat - HA!! A couple of weeks after Lexi was sick Kimmi complained of a sore throat, her throat was so swollen and her tonsils were touching. (This kid NEVER complains!!!) Her lymph nodes were so big that they felt like grapes under her skin below her ears ~ EEK!! Germ took her to after hours Urgent Care and of course she had strep. She was on a lovely dose of Penicillin for 10 days and got over it just in time for Lexi to be diagnosed with it AGAIN!!
I suppose then, that it wouldn’t surprise you to hear that a week after that Mackenna was just not acting right, whining, crying and being really clingy, so I took her to the Dr. just to have her checked out before the weekend. Our regular Ped. was on vacation so we were blessed (UGH) with another Ped. in the office. After waiting for over 20 minutes she came in and was pretty rude ~ I’m sure that she was busy, but she could have at least been human. I explained to her that Lexi and Kimmi had both had strep and that Lexi actually had it again and was still taking meds for it. She explained in a rather haughty tone that kids Mackenna’s age don’t get strep, at this point she was jumping on my last nerve and in my best Mama Bear bitch tone I replied, “well since I already paid the co-pay and waited for you, maybe you could just humor me and test her anyway.”
After receiving a dirty look and enduring a sigh heard round the world she swabbed Kenna’s throat and then declared that it didn’t look bad at all. I said that I was glad to hear that and that I hoped it was completely unnecessary. Then since it was a Friday, she stated that they would call me on Saturday if the test came back positive and let me know. I requested that she enter a prescription for both Kenna and Kimmi so that if it was positive all the girls would be on antibiotics at the same time and therefore prevent it from being spread again. She was not really happy about it and tried to say that if it was positive the Dr. at the other clinic (where I would have to pick up the meds at) could write the prescription. Again I am not very good at being patient with patronizing Dr.’s who don’t know my kids or even take the time to listen to me, so I really tried to calmly explain that while I completely understood the affects of rampant abuse of antibiotics, I would not be picking up any prescriptions unless the test was positive and that treating Kimmi when BOTH of her sisters were positive was really the only intelligent thing to do. Holy Crap ~ come on ~ what would be better, get them all on meds. or just keep treating them one at a time and letting them pass it on between them forever? Needless to say I won the argument, the test came back POSITIVE and Kimmi and Kenna were both on meds for strep too. You would have thought that having all three of them on Penicillin at the same time would have wiped it out . . . but no such luck.
I made another trip to the Dr. with Lexi last Monday and she was again diagnosed with strep. This time they put her back on Penicillin but want to see all three of them at the end of Lexi’s course of medicine. At that time they will test them all and see if one of the girls is a carrier. Hopefully this will be the last course of meds and the last trip to the Dr. for awhile.
Nit pickin’ ~
Unfortunately it actually refers to nits ~ yeah, the eggs left behind by LICE!!! While we were out and about one day I looked down and saw something crawling in Lexi’s hair, as my stomach turned over I searched her head and didn’t find anything else. We stopped by Target on the way home and bought the “stuff” just in case. I had both Lexi and Kimmi jump in the shower and wash their hair really good, then I went through it with the special nit comb. I found both lice (2 live bugs) and eggs in Lexi’s hair, Kimmi’s was clean, but we treated it anyway and Mackenna didn’t have a bug or an egg and therefore escaped treatment (THANK HEAVEN!!!)
I called Alex’s (Lexi’s best friend) mom and let her know so that she could check out her hair and by the time that I got off the phone I was even more grossed out!! Alex’s Mom is a 5th grade teacher and she receives information regarding lice and other communicable diseases (okay ~ so lice isn’t really a disease ~ it just sounds better) anyway, the number one place to get lice is the MOVIE THEATER!! Doesn’t that make you want to bring a trash bag to cover the seat from now on?? Actually I told Germ that I would rather rent movies anyway and it wouldn’t bother me to never see another movie at the theater again!! YECH!!!!
Between washing the sheets, blankets comforters etc., etc., etc., you can see that I haven’t had much time for anything else!! Between washing down everything for strep then again for lice and then having to do it all over again for strep was just WAY more than I was looking to do this summer. Although I do have to say that Germ has been wonderful and sprayed down the van and the furniture just in case any of those little bugs jumped ship (or head to be more exact). I am happy to report that we have not spotted any more bugs or eggs and I’ve stopped itching just thinking about it, so hopefully that too has passed.
I am way behind on my entries and will catch up soon on what the girls are up to, but I just wanted to let you know that I have not been out sunning my buns instead of writing (oh how I wish) and I hope that the “bugs” of all type have long left our little house.
I have been trying to keep up on the everyone and see what’s going one and want to drop a few little notes here.
