Sherry's Diary Entries

September 02 2004

Okay, I am probably the most neglectful diary writer. I always want to wait until I can eloquently espouse something. Well, it’s been since April and the beautiful prose is not flying from my fingertips on to the computer keyboard, so I am just going to give a quick update.

In July I flew half way across the country with the girls (ages 3 ½ and 15months) alone. We were joining my husband who was already in that area on business. I grew up near where his business trip was, so we stayed with my best friend and her family (ages 9, 7, 3 ½). She and I have not lived in the same town since 8th grade but have been best friends since we were 2 years old. Our last fight was in second grade when she formed a club with another girl and did not include me… not that I am bitter or anything.

The flight up was in many ways better than expected… in others still the hell that I expected. Staying with another family 24/7 for a week offered unique challenges. When it came to taking a 2-hour road trip, my family pretty much decided we would not go if we had to ride in the same vehicle as one of her kids. Is that not horrible? This is just a little kid. But a whinny, glass half empty kind of kid. Her family is really nice, but it was just a little too much togetherness for our tastes. But then again, if she called be tomorrow saying they wanted to come stay with us for a week, I would not hesitate to say yes.

And the best part of the whole trip? Neither one of our girls (or her three kids either) got sick. That was a first for my family. Oh her oldest did have a trip to the ER after getting a wrist slit at skating lessons. But it was thankfully nothing too major.

But now our new medical drama. Our youngest had a fever two Friday’s ago. You know how they say unless they have a fever for 72 hours, they don’t want to see them? Well we waited all weekend and she still had the 102 fever. It was responding to meds and was worst in the morning (not afternoon like all other kid fevers we have had). My husband took her in on Monday morning and they say they could wait another 24 to 48 hours to see if it goes away or go ahead and run a catheter to check for a UTI. Since I had mentioned to my husband that I did not like the fact our daughter was showing no other signs of illness other than a fever, and that I was afraid it might be a UTI, he told them to go ahead and test.

Sure enough the preliminary in house exam showed blood, they said it was more than likely a UTI. They gave us Augmentin ES. The lab tests later revealed e-coli. The good news is the antibiotic started working within an hour. The not so good news is that they have us scheduled for further testing at a Children’s hospital. They said that at her age they want to check for physical abnormalities. They also said that she was “pretty sick.” I know, I should have asked what that meant, but I didn’t. She is going to have a Renal Ultrasound and VCUG (Voiding Cystourethrogram) the person that I talked with in radiology made it sound like the tests are nothing major. We have a follow-up exam with our pediatrician next week so we will have a chance to ask her all sorts of questions prior to the procedures. The ultrasound does not sound like a big deal to me. The dye in catheter and x-ray sounds kind of icky to me.

I will update following the tests. I am always better about updating when I have some medical thing to explain.

Take care and thanks for reading.
