Rebekah's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

January 18, 2003

Well, would you look at this?! After years of what can only be described as a serious addiction to iParenting, I finally have my very own “shiny new diary” (as Jen H. from PG Today so aptly put it). I’m excited to start writing about our lives, not only to share with all of you, but especially to share with my family in the years to come.

A little about us

Let’s see … I’m Rebekah (28), wife to Toby (29) and Mama to Aidan, who will turn 2 next month. I grew up in Northern California (Davis to be exact), where Toby and I met when I was a Senior in High School and he was a Freshman at UC Davis. He started attending the church I grew up in, and one evening showed up on my parent’s doorstep to have dinner with a group of guys my Dad had invited over. I actually remember the first time I ever saw Toby, and while there’s no way I could have known that I would marry him 5 years later, I literally felt something “pop” in the back of my head. It’s like something inside DID know that he would be my husband someday.

Anyhow, like I said, we dated for about 5 years before getting married May 15, 1999 in San Diego, surrounded by 200 of our closest friends and family. We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day! The “May Gray” San Diego is known for lifted and we had blue skies and warm sunshine all day long. I even surprised Toby by writing a special song for him that a close friend of ours sang during the ceremony, which was also perfect from start to finish.

We honeymooned for 2 weeks … the first week we took a Princess cruise to the Caribbean, and the second week we drove from Florida all the way up to New York, stopping in Orlando (Disney World!), Savannah, Charleston, Washington D.C. and finally New York City. I had no idea that this amazing city would become my home in just a few short years!

Shortly after returning to San Diego from our honeymoon, I was hired to teach 7th and 8th grade Spanish at a local Middle School. I was blessed to work at a wonderful school with some truly amazing teachers and administrators, and while it wasn’t always EASY, I can honestly say I loved my job. I taught at this school until Aidan was born in February of 2002, when I took on the job description of “SAHM”. It was hard to say good-bye to my students, and I miss interacting with them, but I plan to go back to the classroom someday.

Pregnancy/Birth

As for my pg with Aidan, I won’t go into tremendous detail other than to say I was blessed to feel pretty much fantastic from start to finish. I LOVED being pg. I think the pregnant woman’s body is the most beautiful thing in the world (yes … even when it’s covered in stretch marks!), and tried to soak up every moment of my pregnancy. It was lovely! We planned on having a natural birth, and completed most of the Bradley Method classes we signed up for.

I say MOST because at 35 weeks I developed HELLP Syndrome (essentially VERY severe eclampsia), and Aidan was delivered by C-Section 5 weeks early. I ended up in Intensive Care for 24 hours, and Aidan was in the NICU for about 4 days. Thankfully, we were able to leave the Hospital together and haven’t looked back since. (I will post Aidan’s complete birth story soon, I promise!)

Aidan is now a very healthy and ACTIVE almost-two-year-old. I’ll write all about my sweet guy in my next entry, but suffice it to say that he is the joy of our lives, and I can’t remember what my life was like before he was part of it. =)

California Dreamin’

California dreamin’ is RIGHT! After living our whole lives in the Golden State, the three of us are now freezing our patooties off in C-O-L-D New York while Toby pursues his Ph.D. in History (he completed his Master’s in Historical Theology in May). Right now we’re living on Long Island, but will be moving to Brooklyn this summer, possibly as early as May. As I speak, it is DUMPING snow outside my window, something I presently find beautiful, but anticipate coming to loathe in the weeks and months to come. (Have you ever tried pushing a grocery cart through the snow? NOT fun!)

That about brings us up to date, but before I go, let me just say that I have learned so much from the other ladies here at iParenting, and I hope that this is a place where you will feel comfortable sharing your thoughts, opinions and ideas (respectfully, of course!). I have been blessed to get to know many of the other Diary writers, and am thankful to be part of this community of amazing, intelligent women. You guys are awesome!

That being said, I hope you’ll join me as I wind my way through life, with all it’s ups and downs … away we go!!

Dios te Bendiga,
Rebekah and Aidan
