Thoughts on war…
I have found myself lately remembering back to the Gulf War. My Jr. High School memories reflect mostly on my friends dads leaving for war. Some of them returning and some of them lost forever. War was so real to me. It was very scary.
Now that we face another war I find myself surprisingly aware again. Two of my closest friends will be defending our country. They were deployed months ago but have been in contact weekly via email. This morning when I arrived to work I found an email from one of them. He explained that his email account was being terminated until further notice. He told me not to worry, that everything would be fine. He attached a picture of himself in uniform and wrote happy thoughts of my child’s impending birth. And then he signed his name, told me he would speak to me soon and sent his love to my family. And that was it. My responding email was returned.
I am in awe of the many people who devote their lives to the well being of our country. We have all been flooded by stories of families being separated. The people that we see on TV seem much stronger than I. I watched a wife bid farewell to her husband while holding on to her tiny son. She didn’t shed a tear. She only told a reporter how proud she was. Could I do this? Absolutely not. But thank heaven for the people who can.
Although I am deeply saddened at the necessity for war I do believe that it is just that, a necessity. I think the people out there who believe that this is a rash decision are naive. No person makes a decision to send daddy’s, husband’s, son’s, and wives away, with the possibility of them not returning, without much thought, lost sleep and a very heavy heart. I would never wish to know all that our leaders know…
I pray that a resolve is met quickly and that very few people lose their lives. I pray for the families of those serving our country and for all of the members of our armed forces.
God Bless America
