Nicole's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

January 21, 2003

Last week I stopped at the local deli for a sandwich and whom did I run into? My gynecologist. Just the person you want to see while you are ordering lunch…and OF COURSE he had to reach out and shake my hand! :) Anyway, the first thing he says to me is “Wow! You have sure gotten big!” Oh, why thank you. And then he continues, “Looks like there could be more than one in there!” He laughs a little and then casually walks out the door. He tells me that I may be having more than one baby and then WALKS OUT THE DOOR! I understand that he probably said it to be funny and that there was no merit to his comment…but still! Who does that?

I was more than excited for my appointment yesterday. I wanted to hear my baby’s heartbeat and confirm that I was indeed only going to be giving birth to one child! The appointment started off on a good note when the scale showed that I had lost 4 pounds! Plenty of time to gain! Losing at the beginning is always good! We talked for a bit about when the best time to do the ultrasound would be. He always comes to my appointments with new information regarding either stillborn babies or Cholestasis. He says that he wants me to remain as positive as possible. Then the magic moment arrived. It was finally time to hear my little ones heartbeat. I laid on the table for a long time listening to my own heartbeat on the Doppler. I started to get worried and asked him if he could hear it. He said “Of course. Listen. Here’s one…and here’s another one.” I asked him if he thought he was funny. By this time I had had enough with the twins jokes! But then I could hear them. Oh my gosh. He explained that 80% of the time it is the baby’s heartbeat and the echo of the mom’s heartbeat that he hears. Oh my gosh. I am booked for an ultrasound on Friday morning to confirm whether or not two children will be growing inside my body. Oh my gosh.

I had tons more to write about but I think I will wait until after my appointment on Friday. I guess I am going to have to be faced with the dreaded ultrasound earlier than I expected. Wish me luck and please hope for ONE baby! :)
