Laura's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

December 3, 2004

How is it December ALREADY?!

We are all doing very well, but busy as always. Thanksgiving was wonderful - K actually took a GREAT nap before we headed out, so she was a peach at both granparents' houses that we visited. We don't do 2 dinners, we alternate that, but we do try to visit the other side of the family at some point during the day, either before dinner or for dessert. Since K has been around, it's all depended on her mood, and she was in such good spirits that we went to see both sides and had a nice time with everyone. So nice when a holiday goes well - with these toddlers it's always a little unpredictable (Toddlers - unpredictable? NO! Ha ha!).

I have to brag on my girl a little. And let me tell you that I'm amazed at this latest milestone, both because it's just so wonderful to see and because we never really worked to make it happen, it just kind of did. Katie now knows her ENTIRE alphabet - by sight, by sound, in order, out of order, capitals and lower cases. It's pretty amazing to watch. We can write or point out any letter and she knows it, and about 95% of the time can tell us what sound it makes. She just REALLY likes letters! She has always loved the Dr. Seuss ABC book, and now she likes to watch the video version of it, too. She has the thing memorized! On top of that, she has the LeapFrog caterpillar, and that's helped, too. I think it's more those things than any insistance on our part that has gotten her so interested and learning so much. She can also spell her name and recognize it.

A funny story about the caterpillar, though. We had to have, well, an intervention. The toy has four modes - letter names, sounds, colors, and songs. For each alphabet letter it plays a song. 26 songs to choose from, and Katie all of a sudden decided she didn't like "Jimmy Crack Corn" (I have to confess I don't like it much myself, but that's beside the point). Every time she hit the J and played that song, she would cry and cry! You would think after it making her cry she'd stay away from it and choose one of the other 25 letters, but no - she hit it over and over and over again! Finally I just put it away for a bit. I'll pull it out again after a while and see if it's better. Silly girl!

Baby boy is doing well, along with pregnant mommy. Today I'm 24 weeks pregnant. I am happy to say that I PASSED my three hour GTT last week! Yahoo! Actually, I am a sneaky little thing and took my glucometer with me, did a finger prick before each blood draw, and then looked up my results online. So, I had a pretty good idea I passed right that day. The only bad news here, depending on how you look at it, is that they will retest me again in 4-6 weeks. They'll do the one-hour, and if I fail that they will want me to do the three-hour again. Ugh!

Now, this is where I see a huge difference between first and second pregnancy experiences. With Katie, I did EVERYTHING the drs. and nurses told me to do (Force feed her at the hospital with a bottle so we can test her sugar? Okay. Take this test and do this? Okay). I don't think I ever stopped to think that I could refuse. Now, however, I have decided to draw the line at a second three-hour. It's not at all that I'm feeling uncooperative or wanting to jeopardize the health of my baby, but I KNOW how to do this gest. diabetes thing. I have been following my diet since failing the one-hour, I know how to check my blood sugar and what the levels will be - I've done all of this and not so long ago that I don't remember. So, if I fail the next one-hour, I will just have my dr. write out a script for the testing strips and I'll do what I need to do. I've reached my tolerance for tolerance testing!

Not much else going on here. We are slooooowly getting ready for the holidays. No tree up yet, but it will be tonight. We put a hook in the wall so that K will not pull it over. Ah, the joy of toddlers. I do love decorating the tree each year, though. My sis and I got ornaments each year from my mom, and then took those with us when we moved out, so every year it's like reliving my childhood all over again. :)

Most of my shopping is done, except for little gifs and my FIL. And, since I himmed and hawed and asked my DH so many times what he thought his dad would like (he's very hard to buy for), he finally said, "I'll take care of Dad." Perfect!

Katie is not getting anything 'big' from us or Santa this year. She's getting a little musical set with soft instruments to play, a fun Elmo toy with different animal faces that you put on him, and a princess pillow for her new bed. I'll probably through some little things in her stocking like crayons, etc, but that's about it. I don't want her to grow up thinking that Christmas means getting millions of dollars worth of gifts - and frankly we can't afford it right now anyway. Besides, I'm sure she'll get spoiled from her grandparents, and between all the gifts she'll still be overwhelmed.

That's about it from here - a bit of rambling.

How about you all tell me about some of your favorite, simple holiday traditions?

Take care,
Laura, Katie, & Baby
