ON BEING A (SORT OF) HOUSEWIFE...
Well, things have been busy here at la casa loco! Who knew that I'd still be so busy just working 1/2 days? Don't get me wrong - I LOVE my 1/2 days, and actually the school stuff has been slightly busy because it's the beginning of the year and all that hubub, but not too bad. It just seems like we're always busy, no matter what.
Since my middle school 1/2 day starts at 11:15 (yeah, they eat lunch at 10:55!), Katie and I don't get out much in the morning or have time to do a playgroup or anything. When I work mornings 2nd semester it should be easier. I have, however, been using the time to be productive around the house (most days, anyway). I've been focusing on one area each morning - the floors, or a bedroom, kitchen, bathrooms. It's nice by the end of the week since things look decent if we all pick up our stuff on a regular basis! DH has pitched in, too. He HATES the way I vaccum - I don't do a very good job getting the dog hair (I say it's the machine itself, but oh well). So, he has taken on that role and does it pretty much every evening. It's nice to feel semi-organized now!
THE BUN IN THE OVEN
Things with the pregnancy are going well. I'm 14 weeks today and already in maternity! Granted, some of the stuff still makes me feel like I'm playing dress-up because it's still big, so I guess my clothing dilema days are not finished just yet. I did buy a pair of dressy capri pants on clearance - the Liz Lange ones from Target. They are FABULOUS! They don't look like mat. pants, and are specifically made for this weird in-between stage, and then after baby is born (although here in MI I am pretty sure it will NOT be capri pants weather in late March!). Anyway, for the small amount of money I paid, I have been getting good use out of them.
I started feeling El Chico (did I tell y'all we're having a boy? Um, yeah, we are!) move last week. I don't feel it all the time, and sometimes it really is just gas (lol!), but I feel him almost daily. It's really quite amazing.
Even though I've gotten the okay from the genetic testin, and I'm very relieved, I just am having a hard time getting into the certainty of this pregnancy - I keep worrying that something will go wrong. I remember that I did this with Katie, too, up until the big u/s. I don't know if it's a normal pregnancy fear or if it's based on my personal experience. It makes it hard for me to go the four weeks between Ob appts. because I just feel so nervous sometimes.
However, I'm quite happy to say that my morning sickness has all but left the building (knock on wood)! I have my moments of general 'Uck' when I first wake up each day, but I'm getting sick much less frequently and I feel good pretty much all day. This is a welcomed change!
Okay, and back to having a boy - wow! While I have to say that there was a part of me that would have loved a little girl so that Katie could have that special sister relationship that I have with my only sister, I am also excited about the idea of having one of each. Variety is the spice of life, isn't it? However, I'm really a girl's girl at heart. I was never raised in a family with any boys, and am not yet the parent of a boy. It freaks me out a little! A friend of mine, who has a son, said to me, "I have found that when raising a son, you rely heavily on the man who put you in that position!" That made me laugh, but it is SO true! But I just keep thinking of my nephew - the peeing on the bathroom floor, all those crazy Bionicles toys with the names that I can't keep straight...and let's not even get into the boys that I have seen over the years and the massive amounts of damage that can be done based on those important adolescent decisions...ugh! But, the whole thing is exciting when I'm not getting freaked out by the responsibility part of raising kids! ;)
LAST, BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST...
Katie is absolutely DEVINE! She is talking quite a bit, loves Sesame Street (especially Elmo, of course), and when you ask her what Ernie says, she will make that funny sound he makes when he laughs. Cracks us up! We also get serenaded by her all the time. Her favorite is the "Good Night Katie" song we sing when we put her to bed, because we go through Mommy/Daddy/Grandparents with "Mommy loves you, Daddy loves you..." and she loves to join in.
She still loves looking at her books and being read to, and usually goes through phases where she will bring us the same book about fifty million times in one day. She has memorized her favorites, and I often hear her retelling them to herself, like the Hungry Little Caterpillar. "On Monday, one apple...still hungry. On Tuesday, two pears...still hungry..." It both amazes and humbles me at the same time. It's unbelievable what humans are capable of learning, and how they learn, and how much they have to learn! Another thing Katie likes to do with her books is 'quiz' us - this is entirely our fault. After months of us pointing to things and asking, "What's this?" she will take a finger (usually one of ours), point it to objects or colors on a page and ask, over and over again, "What's this? What's this? What's THIS?"
Physically Katie continues to grow and thrive, despite having become the world's pickiest eater! She will LOVE a food one day (take for instance, oatmeal with applesauce), and the next day will snub it completely. She has recently learned how to jump, which has been fun to watch. At first she'd throw her arms up in the air and bend her knees, but for the longest time her feet never left the ground. Now she's just started to get them up and inch or so, and is so proud of her new accomplishment!
Sometime later this Fall or early Winter, we will be turning our third bedroom/guestroom/playroom into Katie's big girl room. I want to do this well before the baby arrives so that she has time to adjust and doesn't think she's been kicked out of her room by her brother. I was contemplating moving her to a big girl bed then, too, but she just does so well in her crib. She likes it still, has never tried to climb out, and it keeps her safe and secure. A friend has offered to loan us hers, so I think I will borrow it and use that crib for K until she's really ready for the big bed. I had it in my head that she needed to be out of the crib by 2, but really there's no reason for that except that's when I see other people doing it. And frankly, that usually happens because their kids decide they want to escape the crib or that they hate it. I'm prepared to keep her in there until that happens, or she's 20 - whichever comes first (ha ha)!
Well, that's enough rambling from me. If you made it this far, congrats. And let me say that I don't plan on having any entries this long again for a while! :)
Take care,
Laura, Katie, and El Chico (edd 3/25/05)
