11 Months Old Today!
Katie is changing before our eyes from a baby to an active, talkative, giggly toddler! It really is amazing. When I was home with her over the two week break, I really noticed this change. Once she started feeling better, she just started to turn into a KID! She's always on the go - crawling from this to that, pulling herself up, going over to the baby gate and banging on it, following the dog around...makes me tired just watching, let alone keeping up with her! She is very adept at standing on her own now, and is using her walker quite a bit. We got her the Fisher Price Stride-to-Ride walker, and she loves it! It's a different kind of setup than the one we were given as a hand-me-down, and she has a much easier time walking with it. It also plays music, so she has to stop and dance from time to time. What sold DH on it was the basketball hoop at the front! She has been enjoying her added mobility.
THEY SAY SHE COMES BY IT HONESTLY...
My girl is quite a little babbler. As my best friend said to me, "She comes by it honestly, you know!" Who, me? Ha ha! Katie's current vocabulary includes: Mama, Dada, Nana (my mom), Hi, Bye, Dog ("dut") and just today Mouth ("Nuth"). Now, I say that these are words she knows and has said, but that does not mean at all that she will say them when we want/ask her to! Strong willed, this child! Most of the time she just looks at us like, "When WILL you people get out of my face?!" :) Most of the time she just babbles on and on and we have no idea what she's saying, which is just fine.
We were with friends today and talking about how quickly these babies learn (their dd is 9 mos. old). I couldn't put it any other way than that their brains are so transparent at this age. I can literally see what she is thinking most of the time. You can't say that about older kids or adults, but it's so neat to see her little wheels spinning and see her making all these connections.
FUN WITH FOOD
Katie has entered the glorious world of grown-up food in the last few weeks. She just loves to feed herself, and it's nice for us because we can put food on her tray and actually - Gasp - eat our dinner at the same time! She still eats baby food, but has tried (and enjoyed) the following table foods: pasta, diced green beans, diced pears/peaches/apples, chicken pot pie, spaghetti (sauce and all), mini pancakes, cottage cheese (Yuck!), soup, and yogurt. Oh, and of course cheerios! The best self-feeding experience was the spaghetti. It actually was jarred spaghetti, but she was wearing a red shirt that night and was due for a bath anyway, so I decided to make it fun and let her feed herself. Too funny! First it ended up on part of her face, then the sauce radius grew larger, and finally she wiped her spaghetti hand on her face and made an even bigger mess! She sure did enjoy herself, and amazingly the highchair stayed clean! I try to give her something she can feed to herself at every meal. The dairy, I'm happy to say, is going really well. Since Katie's a soy baby I was wondering how she'd do. The dr. suggested that cottage cheese would be a good place to start, and after doing that for a week or two we added yogurt. Around her b-day I will start introducing milk gradually until it replaces her formula altogether. I've been buying organic or hormone-free milk for us, and I'll continue that for Katie. Even that, being expensive for milk, is much cheaper than formula!
WEIGHT/TTC/ETC.
Sure, why not lump all that together?! My weight loss is now at 17 lbs. total since October. Not the fastest, but I'm steadily losing so I'll take it. People are starting to notice and say things, which is really nice, but I still have quite a ways to go, so while it does encourage me to see a difference, I also need to make sure I don't become complacent. Mind you, I'm not even trying to get to some impossible ideal weight. My goal is actually about 10 lbs. more than my all-time best weight, so I feel it's realistic. If I get down to where I was, that's great.
We are officially TTC again. It sounds like the craziest thing to say. I never imagined that I would try to have another child before my first was over 1, but given our odds and my chances of miscarriage, we are not wasting any time. I have ovulated on my own 2 cycles in a row, but it was late and my progesterone still wasn't super high. So, I took clomid this month (50 mg/day) and am waiting to see what happens. The sense of urgency I felt before is gone, at least for now, and it's kind of nice. I'm sure it will return the farther we get into this, and I'll become the basket case that I was before! Good times, good times...
BIRTHDAY PLANS
Let's just say that Katie's first birthday will not be the small affair that all the parenting magazines recommend. Do the people that write those things not have families?! I made up the list of invites, and it's upwards to 50 people right now. We have only invited 3 couples who are good friends and not related to us, and the rest are family! Ugh. Somebody REALLY needs to kick me in the shins if I suggest this again.
I will write more about the party plans next time. Right now Katie is ready to go to bed, so we're going to get a bottle and take a rock!
Take care,
Laura
