25 Weeks
I have found, at long last, a Family Doctor :-) I am so happy that I could theoretically jump for joy. Except for this little, but rapidly growing bundle in my belly! After some soul searching I found that I really could not go back to my previous Dr, she was just too horrendous. I asked the women in my Yoga practice if they knew of any doctors accepting new patients, one lady gave me names of two doctors in the same practice that were indeed accepting new patients. I stopped by the office and talked to the receptionist about setting up an appointment and by that time only one of the doctors was still accepting new patients. I knew it was going to be a really great doctor because the receptionist was totally on the ball, knew exactly what information she needed from me and was friendly to boot. What a deal!
So, Simon and I went in to meet her, and it went so well. I explained why I needed a doctor and my oh-so-recent experience and she was concerned that I was treated in that way – a good response :-) We basically just chatted a little about us and what we were doing now (our theses, I stay home and Simon starts his Ph.D, working from home) and a little about her as well. We talked about my pregnancy a bit as well of course, and what my visits would be like with the Little One. We found out that she has visiting rights at the Grace, the maternity hospital, which is really wonderful, because she may be able to be present at the birth, if I choose, but will be able to come by afterwards regardless to check on me. She seemed really sincere, nice and willing to make sure that I get good care, but more importantly, that the Little One gets good care. She was really excited for us and also excited about meeting the Little One, which really (obviously) put her in my good books!
I made an appointment to see her in a couple of months after a couple of my prenatal appointments and as we were walking out of the building Simon said that she was good, because (as usual, he is so observant) she had her textbooks and consulting texts on the bookcase in her office. I realized that my previous doctor never had any reference material within the office that I saw her in, something that was a little puzzling after some thought! So, my search is over, and my stress level has decreased a little bit now that I no longer have to worry about trying to find a doctor in this chronically doctor short province. Oh, the last thing that makes me really glad that we liked her is that there is a pharmacy in the same building, so that if I am early for an appointment, I can just cruise the aisles, or if we need to have a prescription filled, I can do it within the building – how convenient is that? :-)
After our appointment, Simon dropped me off for my second Aquafit class. The ladies were glad to see me again, and it was a fairly good class. However, it did sort of confirm my initial feelings that it just wasn’t quite enough for me, work-out wise. I did feel good in the water, but I wasn’t breathing harder at all at any point in the class, where a number of the ladies were indeed working quite hard. This time I really tried to use my arms and hands to provide added resistance during some of the exercises to try to make it harder, but still, it was just too easy. In a way, it makes me feel good because I am in such obvious good health, but at the same time, I really have to find something that is making me work a little!
Our master bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, which was a big selling point for us when we purchased the house. The other selling point? The 6’ whirlpool jet tub. Don’t you feel jealous now? Except that I haven’t been able to use it now for almost six months, because of the risks moving water like that can be for pregnant women. Gosh, I hope I’m right about those risks – just that it isn’t really good for the cervix etc… Otherwise, I’ve been missing A LOT! Anyway, back to the point. There is this really fabulous diamond window, the only window, in the bathroom, but it is located directly beside the toilet, and faces out toward the street. While I personally don’t have a problem with its placement, Simon, being a man, does have a problem. Since we have moved into the house we have had this paper fan-type window covering over it, but it really is at best a temporary solution. We have been wracking our brains for a solution which would not require a huge amount of financial input. The solution we have found? Window paint, the stuff that crafter’s use to make stained glass looking artwork on glass. We thought it was a rather crafty idea and applied it this weekend. So far, it’s looking really good. We did the bottom half of the window, because we wanted to test it out before we committed to a larger part of the glass. The window has interior dividers in between the two panes of glass, so that it is actually comprised of four diamonds and we will paint all but the very top diamond, leaving that clear. It lets in so much more light now into the bathroom it’s really wonderful.
This weekend our yard work continued… I thatched the remainder of the yard, which pretty much exhausted me for the rest of the weekend, but also looked so good after doing it that I couldn’t feel too badly about how tired I was – the results were so visible! The line between our yard and our neighbour’s on each side was very visible, which again made me really proud of all the work that I did to make it look that good. Because the weather was so fabulous on Saturday, I sacrificed my yoga class so that I could get the yard done in one day. I really missed going to class, but knew that I was still getting a good workout with the thatching, so it was really only the camaraderie that I was missing out on. Simon was hard at work as well for the whole day; he raked clear the remaining portions of the grass extension I spoke of in the last entry. When he was done all that he could stand for the day – it being rather depressing work because although we were finding soil, it was still really rocky and very very hard work – he started to dig one of the holes for the tree we’re going to plant in the fall. The hole was going really well, so well in fact that we were surprised. Until we found the mother of all rocks. Simon worked for literally an hour at trying to get it out, and found most of the corners, but got so exhausted in the process that he had to stop. But, it is a really good sized hole, so it’s just a matter of extracting that darn rock…
What else, what else? Oh yes! My MIL is a wonderful sewer (she made her wedding dress sort of thing) and has a tradition of making pyjamas for the family. When we were still in Victoria, we bought some wonderfully yummy flannel for myself and some flannel and cotton for Simon and she made us pj’s for our Christmas present that year. My pj’s are one pair of bottoms, with two different tops, where the tops are more like nightshirts than a pyjama top. It has long, long sleeves (I have incredibly long arms) that actually reach my wrists because it is custom-made, and buttons all down the front, so I can have it totally buttoned up or unbuttoned over a tank. I love the tops so much that I thought it would be really good for sleeping after the Little One arrives, as I plan to breastfeed, and the Little One will be sleeping in our room for at least the first three months or so. So, I went on a search for fabric that would be nice to match to my existing bottoms but as well, are somewhat similar to each other and in a cotton fabric, not flannel, for the warmer months. They will be the same style, except with elbow length sleeves, not wrist length. I found a really sweet print fabric, and on sale to boot, which is great.
We sent off the fabric along with some clothes that we had discovered… er… determined were never going to fit Simon again and because of our recent successful experience with vacuum-packing, we used the same technique to fit everything into one box. Well, okay, perhaps the full truth is that we couldn’t find a box that everything could fit into and so we resorted to vacuum-packing it so that we didn’t have to ship two boxes, which would have been more expensive. We were just a little concerned that the box might explode, so we taped it in a number of different directions and left it sitting on the kitchen table for a day just to make sure before we sent it through Canada Post. We certainly didn’t want any government types knocking on our door about a suspicious package that exploded. The most potentially harmful thing in the box is the thread I had picked out to match the fabric. Deadly, I tell you. Anyway, I am getting really excited about having these nighties. I really enjoy my flannel ones, but when it gets to 36 and 38 degrees here, with the humidity pushing it well into the forties, I would really like to lounge in something that is a little less warm, you know? :-)
Symptoms: I have had the strangest symptom this week. An extremely supersensitive nose. I smell things like I have never smelled anything ever before in my life. Like the fact that my hands smell so badly that I can hardly stand it. At first I could not, for the life of me, figure out where this awful smell was coming from, but it seemed to only happen when my hands were typing. I wash them and put nice smelling lotion on them and it doesn’t stop the stench. Sitting at the computer all day, typing away is literally driving me crazy! Argh! And driving with Simon the other night, I could smell his breath so strongly it was making me really nauseous, I finally had to tell him that he had to do something about it right then and there or I was going to throw up in the car, something that repelled me so much because I knew that it would REALLY smell. I really, really hope that this symptom is one of those really quick phase ones. I don’t know if I could stand to be this odour-conscious for days on end. I would start to go a little insane I think. One good symptom, or rather lack of one is that my heartburn, for the moment, is gone. Yeay! :-) This is one symptom that I rejoice in its absence. I don’t particularly mind taking Gaviscon to make me feel better, it is just that I was having such mild heartburn for the entire day, I didn’t want to have to wake up and take some, then have some more at lunch etc., etc. So, anyway, that seems to be about it for now… We’ll see what happens in the coming week!
**Talk to Me**
Did you find yourself searching for a new doctor once you were pregnant, and what technique did you find yourself using (keep in mind that Canadian and US health care is dramatically different)
What strange pregnancy symptoms did you have, if any, and did they take you by surprise as they did me?
Namaste, Laura and the Little One
