Macy – getting closer to 4
Erin – ONE!!!
I hardly even know where to start this entry. My head is all over the place and it seems like so much has happened since my last entry. I guess I’ll start where I left off the last entry and see how far I get.
Erin’s illness…
Erin was not herself the entire time DH was gone. She went from throwing up, to having a high fever, to having a runny nose and cough, to 4 days of diarrhea, horrible diaper rash and now an ear infection. This poor child just doesn’t know when to stop!! I kept thinking she was teething, but after my trip to the Dr. today I know she’s not teething (I’ll get to her appt. in a minute). So, it looks like she’s just had one virus after the other, culminating in an ear infection. She’s been such a trooper and other than being a little demanding and waking up a little early, you wouldn’t know she felt bad. I can tell she’s off just by how she’s acting, but to other people she seems just fine. But, a Mother knows these things. So, she starts an antibiotic today and hopefully she will be feeling better soon.
My in-laws, Erin turns one and Columbia…
My in-laws came up last Friday. It was really good to see them and they were so happy to see the girls. Friday night I had gotten some soup and we had a light dinner and all hit the hay early. Saturday morning I hear Macy asking to get out of her room (I think as long as I live hearing her say “May I get out of my room please?” in that little sleepy voice will be one of my fondest memories of Macy as a child). So, I tell her to come get in bed with Mommy. I went to tell her that today was Erin’s birthday and when she gets up we’re going to go sing to her and I just start crying. Macy couldn’t understand what was wrong and I had to explain that sometimes we cry because we’re happy. I just was so overwhelmed that an entire year had passed! It just didn’t seem possible.
After my in-laws got up we all went into Erin’s room and sang Happy Birthday to her. She had the biggest grin on her face and mostly seemed like she was thinking “what the heck are all you people doing in my room so early”. It was really precious. After breakfast we were getting ready to take Erin to the mall to get her pictures made. My SIL was suppose to be there at 9:30 AM so we could get to The Picture People by 10AM (silly me, forget to make an appt and I was trying to get a walk-in appt.). Well, at 9:20 my SIL calls and I answer the phone with some smart comment and she says she’s coming but have we seen about the shuttle. I tell my FIL to change it to FOX news and we soon realize that there is a problem with the shuttle.
My FIL has worked for NASA for over 30 yrs and this really hit us all hard. My DH was outside his classroom watching when Challenger exploded and he still talks about how that impacted their community. My in-laws live on Merritt Island which is right next to Cape Canaveral. Everyone works for NASA in that area and it really is a small community. As everything was unfolding it seemed clear that something really bad had happened and that no one survived. Then our thoughts turned to my DH. He was still in Germany about to board an 8 hour flight. My FIL made several comments that he just wanted his son home. I know the 2 aren’t related, but I guess there’s just something about having your family together when a tragedy hits. Plus, I think it helped him focus on something else other than Columbia.
After about an hour we decided to leave my FIL at home and go ahead with our plans for Erin. It wasn’t doing Macy any good seeing all of us so sad and she really didn’t understand. So, we head off to the mall. I was so lucky… I got to The Picture People and since I was really early they got us right in. Erin did great and she looked like the perfect birthday girl. It was so funny because I knew she didn’t feel well and she was tired. She would fuss until right when it was time to smile and then she would break out in the biggest smile and the photographer would capture that perfect moment.
While we were waiting for the pictures to develop we all went to lunch. I ordered Erin her first meal off the menu (grilled cheese) and she happily sat and ate most of it. Afterwards we got her a little cake and sang Happy Birthday again! The pictures turned out great and I plan on updating her webpage as soon as I get her birthday pictures developed.
DH’s return and the unveiling of “While You Were Out” …
After the mall I rushed back home and dropped off my MIL, SIL and the girls. I picked up my FIL and we headed to the airport. We got there about the time his flight landed, but since 9/11 the Atlanta airport has changed so much that you can’t get anywhere near the terminal. So we had to wait at the top of the escalators, along with everyone else. It took over an hour for him to finally walk around the corner. It was so great to see him!!! Then we go to get his bag and after about an hour of looking and everyone else from his flight gone, we realize his bag is not there. The only bag that was there is one of his classmates bag that is identical to his bag. So, it was obvious that she had taken his bag. So, we left with the understanding that the airline would deliver his bag the next day. Finally, 4 hours after we had left, we finally got him home!
I let him spend a few minutes with the girls and then he commented that just wanted to take a long hot shower. So it was time for the BIG unveiling of the bathroom. He was really surprised and really like it. He couldn’t believe I did all that while he was gone and took care of the girls. He’s commented several times since then how much he’s enjoying it. So, all and all it was worth it!
Erin’s birthday party…
We spent most of Sunday getting ready for the party. I had only invited about 12 people over and 2 of them called and said they couldn’t come because my friend was sick, so we ended up with about 10 people. I had almost 40 people over for Macy’s first birthday, but I just couldn’t see overwhelming DH with a house full of people when he had just gotten home. But, what we lacked in people we made up for in fanfare. I decorated, had balloons everywhere, she had a ton of presents and she had the biggest most beautiful cake I’ve ever seen (I’ll post pictures on her website). She really loved all the attention and she enjoyed opening presents.
About her eating cake… let’s just say I’m glad I took her dress off!!! She dove into that thing like she was trying out for the Olympic high diving team. She had purple icing everywhere and it was so cute. I’m glad we got it all on video and took about a million pictures. She’ll have a lot of pictures to remember her first birthday by.
Erin’s one year checkup…
I took her yesterday and other than them finding an ear infection, she’s great! She weighed 23.5 lbs and is 31 inches long. That puts her in the 85% for weight and over the 95% for height. We’ve never had a child in the 85%!!!! Macy has always been off the charts and Erin has too until this visit. The Ped said that was fine and not to worry. She was also really impressed by how good Erin was. Erin just sat their while the Dr. listened to her heart and lungs. And she cried for about a minute when she got her shots. She’s such a great baby!!! She’s an active baby, but she is wonderful!
I should add that Erin is not walking yet and it seems like it will be a few weeks (or months) away. She’s already pretty hard to contain, so that’s fine with me! She has started a few new tricks. She’s waves at everyone and she loves to dance when she hears music and her latest is whenever I say “How big is the Baby Erin? Sooooooo Bigggggg” those hands go straight in the air and she’s so proud of herself.
What’s Macy up to?...
Macy’s been able to recognize all her letter, upper and lower case, she can spell about 10 words, write her name and her latest thing is she knows the sounds of letters as well. The other day she was with her Grammie and says “Grammie is like Grape and so it starts with a G”. She was sounding it out and figured out what letter it started with!! I have a friend that is a kindergarten teacher and she said Macy was way ahead of some of the kids in her class and Macy is only 3! I’m really proud of her; she is just growing by leaps and bounds every day. And her other thing is she is so independent these days. After her bath in the evening, while I’m getting Erin ready for bed, Macy will get out of the tub, dry herself off, pick out her panties, put them on, put her nightgown on, brush her teeth and hair, pick out her stories and will wait in bed until I come read them to her. Now, I think that’s really great!!! It makes life so much easier on me now. I do have to rebrush her hair and I make sure she does a good job on her teeth, but she pretty much does it all by herself. Wow!!! Where did the time go????
I guess that catches me up to today. Eventually I will get back to doing my organization tips and I hope to write entries that are more than just a chronological order of my week. It just gets harder and hard to keep up these days. It seems like time is moving at break neck speed.
Well, I’m off for now. I have laundry up to my eyeballs and my house is a wreck from having company all weekend and my best friend is coming in this weekend from Nashville. I love it; but I feel like I need to install a revolving front door :o)
Hope everyone is doing well!!!
Take care,
Lara, Macy & Erin
