Lara's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

January 26, 2003

I’ve promised myself that I’m getting to bed early tonight, but I did want to update my diary, so this is going to have to be quick.

Things have not slowed down since my last entry. We were running around like crazy getting everything for DH to leave on his big trip. Then I’ve been planning Erin’s first birthday party and I’ve been planning my own version of “While You Were Out”. Not to mention we have had some of the coldest weather in years and Erin keeps me hopping whenever she’s awake. So, despite the fact that all my company left, I’ve still been really busy.

My DH did get to Romania safely and he’s been having a good time and learning a lot. He will be home soon and that means we are closer than ever to his graduation. I know for anyone that reads my diary, you’ll be so happy when he finally gets his cap and gown so I will stop complaining about him being in school. I won’t lie, this past year has been really hard, but now that we’re so close to being done I’m feeling some pressure slowly lifting from my shoulders.

As for my “While You Were Out” adventure... I got a brainstorm about 2 wks before DH left and I’m totally redoing our master bathroom while he is out of the country and surprise him when he gets home. I’m almost finished with it and he is going to be shocked!! I think it’s turning out really nice. Our master bathroom is really big. Way bigger than it needs to be; I would much rather have some of that square footage in our family room. I’ve never really known what to do with it since we’ve lived here and it has been the most neglected room of the house. It dawned on me a few weeks ago that my DH spends about 80% of his time in our bedroom and bathroom (our office is in the sitting area of our bedroom). He usually comes in, eats a quick dinner, spends a few minutes with the girls (assuming her gets home before they go to bed) and then he’s in the office until he goes to bed. He loves to take really long showers in the morning and he spends a lot of time in the bathroom (I really think it’s his favorite room of the house :o) And to be honest, I can barely keep it cleaned and it’s one of the rooms in the house I spend little to no time in. I’m a Mom; I spend all my time in the kitchen and playing on the floor. So, I decided to create him a place that he would really enjoy.

I’ve painted it a really nice sage green. And I’m using purple accents. I had my BIL come over and replace the light fixtures from cheap gold to really nice silver fixtures, which looks awesome with the sage and purple. I bought pictures, shelves to organize, new rugs and other things to make it nice. I’m also going to do a few things to finish decorating our bedroom. I’m trying to not spend too much money, but I have to admit I’ve spent more than I planned on. I’m pretty sure he won’t mind once he sees it. And he’s never been one to gripe about my spending habits. I think (I hope) he’s really going to like it.

I’ve been staying up late every night to work on it since I can only get in there when the girls are in bed. Although the other morning Erin was napping and Macy wanted to help me paint. She was so cute and is the best little helper. She kept saying “but Mommy I need a job. You’re painting, what can I do to help?” I think when she’s a teenager I’m going to really miss her helpful spirit.

I told her that the bathroom was going to be a surprise for Daddy and to keep it a secret. I could hear her talking to him on the phone and telling him the entire thing. So, she asked if she could tell Grammie and I said that was fine. Well, my SIL called later in the day and I thought I would test her. I handed the phone to her and she said “Auntie Paige, guess what we’re doing?” then she puts the phone down and say “is it okay to tell Auntie Paige”. I thought that was so cute. She almost told her, and then she stopped herself. She’s a good little secret keeper! She did talk to her Daddy this afternoon and she kept didn’t breath a word.

The other thing that has been going on is, is Erin had her first stomach flu. Last Tuesday I get her up and it looked like she had thrown up in the bed, but I wasn’t sure. She of course never cried during the night. I sleep with her monitor right by my head and I didn’t hear a thing. So, I assumed it was just spit up from the night before (either way I felt terrible that I didn’t know and she had to sleep in it). So, I get her downstairs with her bottle and run upstairs to finish getting ready (I was speaking at a MOPs meeting that morning). I go down to check her a few minutes later and she had thrown up her entire bottle. She was just laughing and smiling despite the fact she had vomit coming out of her nose and all over her fact (again, I felt terrible. I’m not getting any Mom of the Year Award over this one). So, I get her cleaned up and get her a bath. DH agrees to stay home so I can go speak.

She slept the entire time I was gone and when I got home I checked on her and she threw up all over me, so I’m pretty sure she has a stomach bug at this point. Hey, I’m bright, you can’t pull much over on me :o) She pretty much either slept on me or in her bed the rest of the day. By the evening she had stopped throwing up, but was running a fever of 102.5. She was miserable. But, even through all that she really never fussed, I could tell she didn’t feel well because she wanted to be held and wouldn’t eat.

Thankfully, between the Tylenol and the Advil her fever came down and by the next morning she was much better. Personally, I think Advil works so much better on a fever for anyone interested.

Thursday morning we get up and there was snow on the ground! It does not snow here very often and it was really pretty. The only downside was I needed to take DH to airport in the morning and I hated to have to get the kids out in that mess. We don’t have salt trucks or plows’ coming through our neighborhood and it was like an ice rink getting to a main road. Macy loved the snow. As soon as she woke up she wanted to get out in it and played. We got her all coated up with gloves and hats and she spent about 10 min. out there before she had had enough. It was really cute seeing how excited she got.

I did get DH to the airport in one piece and the weather only got colder. By Friday morning it was 8. Several of my neighbors and friends had pipes that busted so I was really thankful we didn’t lose our water and we had plenty of heat.

Fast forward to Friday night… I made a huge mistake and one I won’t soon repeat. I fed Erin some concentrate formula. Something I hadn't done since she was a baby, but I had some on hand that I was wanted to get rid of so I fixed her a nice big bottle. She started getting fussy about the time she finished it. She laid on my chest for an hour afterwards. She wasn't really that fussy, but she wouldn't perk up either. My BIL came over to help hang a light fixture. So, I head upstairs to show my BIL where to hang the fixture. Thankfully, he had run downstairs and didn't have to witness what was soon to happen.
I'm standing in the doorway to our bedroom waiting to tell my BIL when he had hit the right circuit breaker when all the sudden I look down and out of my sweet babies mouth and nose comes more vomit than I think is humanly possible!!! I was literally soaked from head to toe and so was she. Once that was over she just started smiling and laughing. That was obviously what had her so fussy before. I just stood there in shock. When my BIL comes back upstairs I'm thinking he's going to loose it and my poor SIL has lost any chance she ever has of getting her DH to reproduce :o)
Thankfully, my SIL shows up about 10 min after I get the kids in the bathtub and I have to literally take a shower and condemn the clothes we were all wearing. Thankfully, it was just formula and I got most of it up out of the carpet.
So, I guess that catches everyone up on all the bodily fluids that have been flooding my house this week. I hate when my kids are sick, but I really love taking care of them. I think I’m at my best when they are at their worst. There is nothing that will cure a boo-boo faster than a kiss from Mommy. And I love being able to comfort them when they feel bad. I would just assume them not get sick, but I typically don’t mind it when they do. Most of the time my girls are pretty independent and it makes me feel good when they really don’t want anything but a hug from me. So, Erin and I have really had some bonding time this week.

Well, I better end this entry. It’s getting late and I need to get into bed. I’m working on an entry for Erin’s first birthday and I’m sure I’ll do an update on how DH liked the bathroom and how Erin’s party went. We are having her party on Sunday night.

Take care,
Lara, Macy & Erin
