Introduction
Sorry it has been so long since my last entry. Work has been absolutely crazy, and on the home front we have all been sick with colds. Actually, I have also been suffering from migraines, which I get all the time. In fact, they have increased so much, I have an appointment with a neurologist at a headache clinic. I am hoping to maybe find some new treatments that can help.
I think yesterday was a bit of a turning point for me as far as work is concerned. I have worked as an attorney for my firm for over 6 years, and during that time, I have never been asked to attend a pro football game in our firm box with clients. That may seem like a big whine, but in reality, I don't have a huge desire to go to games (I'd rather be home on my couch watching football!) but in the firm, and in law generally, these types of events are seen as an opportunity for client contact and a possibility to get more work from certain clients. So, anyway, yesterday at 3:15, I was asked to go to that night's football game with a big client, who when they heard a rundown of who was attending, noticed there were no women attorneys. I have worked with this client, so it seemed natural for me to be invited. But, of course, inviting the woman was an afterthought, and as a mother, with two sick kids and a sick husband at home, there was no way I could make any sort of arrangements at 3:15 to go to a game that same evening. So, I declined. What infuriates me the most, is that I know that when I get my review, I will be told that I need to be available to "wine and dine", etc., if I want to make partner, and the fact that I said No to this game will come back to bite me. So, basically, there was a complete realization by me that I cannot have a career and be a mother. At least, not have a successful career. And, I may be okay with that, as I want to be with my kids when they are sick (and when they are well!) and if that means not making partner, then so be it. My kids and my family mean more to me than any of that.
Anyway, I'm not sure if that all made any sense, so to those of you still reading -- thanks!
Well, I just got the sickies to bed, so its time for me to go too, since you never know when some little footsteps will come in your room in the middle of the night!
Take care everyone!
Kathy
