October 27, 2003

We took the girls to the pumpkin patch a few weekends ago. It was a hot day, but we dressed cool and drove the long ride out there. The horses took our wagon out to the patch and we searched around for the perfect pumpkin. You would have thought Reilly was in 7th heaven – she loved it! She has said the word “pumpkins” at least one hundred trillion times since that day. She was a bit hesitant in the petting zoo, but she loved her ride on the pony. The ponies went around in a circle, a bit fast in my opinion, but Brent walked along beside her and made sure she didn’t come off. Her face was lit up the whole time, the biggest smile as she went around and around. Over the weekend we went to a street corner pumpkin stand and bought a few more pumpkins – now we have several in all different sizes, including a white one. They are arranged at our door, along with “Bones” the skeleton who hangs on the door. Reilly insists we go outside to see the pumpkins and visit Bones at least a few times every day. We are going to carve one of them this week, I think she’ll get a kick out of that. It’s hard to get her to come back in the house! For Halloween, my parents are coming over to see the girls – this is our first time trick-or-treating. I’m going to make caramel apples and a cream cheese pumpkin roll to enjoy when we’re done answering the door and going out ourselves.

Katie was prescribed Augmentin to clear up her ears. We had never had that medicine before and were warned it might cause diarrhea. It did. We kept her diaper changed and didn’t have problems until the 4th day of the 10-day prescription. Katie’s bottom was red so Brent put Creamy Desitin on it. When he brought her out, she was screaming bloody murder and I couldn’t figure out why. Finally Brent said the only thing different than before was that he used the Desitin on her, so I went and checked her bottom-her skin was flaming red where it had been fine a few hours earlier. I put her in the bath to wash it off and she was OK after that. The Creamy Desitin went straight in the garbage, we had a similar experience with Reilly not long ago with it. Katie’s bottom didn’t improve and I called the doctor a few days later. The nurse said there was nothing you could do except baking soda baths and hydrocortisone cream; we did this for a few more days with no improvement. In the meantime poor Katie is miserable. Then I made a doctor appointment for her to see if we could get a prescription – the doctor said all we needed was Lotrimin from the drug store. I was so mad! Why didn’t the nurse say this days ago, it would have saved Katie at least a few days of being uncomfortable?! She has quickly improved with the Lotrimin. We had a setback this weekend – her skin is still red and tender, but getting better. On Saturday when she got up from her nap, she was crying (unusual), when I checked her diaper it was dirty and her skin was literally bleeding. I guess I feel so bad since neither of my kids has suffered from diaper rash before – it sucks! But I think she is getting better again.

The big news this week is that Katie is walking!! Not officially walking, but she takes about 5-6 steps on her own. Every night we practice – Brent & I sit facing each other and get her headed in the right direction and off she goes until she reaches one of us. She thinks it’s great and smiles her huge, squinty smile the whole time. Reilly insists on being part of the fun too, so she also walks between us taking turns with her sister. We make a big deal out of her walking too. Reilly learned to walk at 10 ˝ months, Katie is about one month behind her on that, I think because she is bigger and has more weight to maneuver. When Reilly learned, she took two steps one day, the next day she was off and never crawled again. Katie is taking her sweet time about becoming more of a walker than a crawler.

Brent & I are soon to celebrate our 4th anniversary. We had two things we were considering doing in celebration – a James Taylor concert or seeing John McEnroe in a fundraiser tennis match. Of course we could have done both, but I decided we needed to choose one over the other. Since we have both recently finished McEnroe’s biography we thought it would be fun to see him. We had someone watch the kids and off we went, excited to see some good tennis. When we got there we knew something was wrong – there was no one in the arena. That’s when we found out the fundraiser had financial backing problems and it was cancelled the day before. We were bummed. Our anniversary isn’t for another 2 weeks so I guess we can still plan something else.

We are having trouble with our daycare – Katie is being bit in the baby room by another baby – I don’t know how many teeth this baby has but its enough to make a full circle on Katie when she bites. I didn’t know babies under 1 can have that many teeth already, heck Katie has only 3 and she is almost one. Two weeks ago I picked her up and she had a bite on her face! This wasn’t the first time she had been bit. Brent & I are furious. We made some big decisions last week regarding this, more on that next time.

Happy Halloween!!

Jenny
