July 2, 2004

OK, well! This is going to be one giant, mish-mash of an entry, so hold on! There’s been a lot going on, and I want to get it all down for posterity. I have procrastinated long enough, so here goes…

Let’s start with me and Moe and life in general, cause I never do that… By the time I get done writing about the kids, one of them usually needs me and I have to end the entry. So I’m going to start in reverse today.

Who knew summer would be such a busy time for us? It’s not like I have older kids who are out of school for the summer. Nonetheless, busy we are! Moe is busy at his work because over the summer, they are installing new computers in every class and networking the whole school! (He is a tech guy, if you didn’t already know…) That is in addition to all the work he has to do at the church- website, media, sound, lights, recording… the list goes on and on (and ON! Trust me.) It hurts my head just thinking about it!

I am busy as well, but in a good way. Of course there are the usual things to keep up with- the house, the kids, etc. But lately, I have been starting some new things that I am really excited about.

One of those things is my new business. I am going to be doing “The Body Shop at Home” parties. They are called “Girls’ Nite Out” and they are SO much fun! You can do one of 4 different themes for your party- facials, foot fun, spa experience, and make up. I should be getting my kit pretty soon, and I am so excited to get started! I am really happy b/c I will be helping out financially and still get to stay home during the day with Josh. If anyone wants to check it out and see what I’m talking about, here is the web address: http://www.usa.thebodyshop.com/web/tbsus/at_home.jsp

This leads me into the next area I wanted to discuss- pumping. I will need to pump in order to leave some milk for Josh when I am working. I don’t usually get too much when I pump, though. If I feed him on one side only all night, and let the other side build up, the most I can get is 4 ounces. And I can only ever pump out of the left side; the right side yields nothing. I know it’s in there, b/c Josh can get it out, but I can’t seem to. Also, it hurts when I pump and my nipple seems to stretch too much and crack. Overall, it is just not a pleasant experience. So, I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on how to pump without pain, and possibly how to increase milk supply. TIA!

Now on a totally different subject, we recently joined the YMCA. I think it will be really good for us b/c we need to be more active. Sarah loves the “BIG pool!” and I think we are going to put her in swimming lessons in a few weeks. At her age, she will be in a “Parent & Tot” class, where essentially they will teach US how to teach her. It’s going to be fun! =) Also, they have free childcare for up to 90 minutes so the parents can work out in the gym, take a class- whatever. I am going to be taking Water Aerobics on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. I thought it sounded cheesy at first, but after taking my trial class, I quickly realized that it’s quite a workout! It really works you whole body, and I am SO looking forward to shedding that extra baby weight and getting toned. I also intend to go to the gym in the morning on the days I don’t have class to just do a short workout- treadmill, some crunches, etc. I am not at all used to ay kind of fitness routine, so I want to start out slow and work my way up. So, how bout you? Do you have a fitness routine? Tell me about it! =)

Also, our family really needs to kick the fast-food habit. It’s been a huge struggle for us. We are just so busy that we never have the time to cook at home. Confession time: We eat fast food at LEAST once a day, sometimes more! (EEK! I can feel the nasty glares being hurled at me already! But at least I admitted it…whew! I feel better already!) Has anyone else had a similar problem and triumphed over it? If so, how did you do it? We know it is extremely bad for our health and we want to make a change. Ideally, I would like to see us cutting back so far that we have fast-food no more than once a week. Any suggestions on how to avoid the McTrap are greatly appreciated!

AND NOW, SOME RANDOM EVENTS…

I couldn’t figure out where the best place for this would be, so I guess here’s as good as any! These are just some things that happened recently that I didn’t want to forget. So here goes…
June 14, 2004- Josh fell off the bed while napping!
Mommy was a mess, but Josh fell back to sleep within minutes of being picked up.

June 2004-
Sarah’s new favorite movies- Snow White and Aladdin

Sarah's cute sayings:
"I choose you, Mommy." (adapted from Aladdin)

June 24, 2004- Sarah has cereal w/ milk for the first time and does pretty well with it.

June 26, 2004- Josh drinks from sippy cup
Sarah and Josh bathe together for the first time...and LOVE every minute!
Sarah says" We're going to Bob Heavens!" (Bob Evans...so cute!)
Sarah says, to Daddy, "You're annoying me." LOL.

June 29, 2004- Sarah learns how to drink from a regular cup!

June 30, 2004- Sarah and Josh go in the kiddie pool in the yard. Josh’s first time in a pool. The water is cold, but he has a blast! He splashes and plays with sissy!

JOSHUA:

6 months old

What can I say about this little cutie? Well, he’s not so little, actually! He is 27.5 inches long, and tips the scales at 20 pounds!! For a while, we were having a problem with him spitting up quite frequently. I was starting to wonder if he might have reflux, but the problem was much simpler than that. Turns out I was overfeeding him. I didn’t know that was even possible with a breastfed baby! When I took a look at his feeding schedule, though, I realized I was still feeding him every 2 hours, like a newborn! He now eats every 3 or 3.5 hours, and he barely spits up at all. Thank God we got that figured out! My poor baby!

Speaking of feeding, I just wanted to ask for some quick advice. We put together Josh’s crib, and he naps in there with no problem. Overnight however is another story. My question is: How do I eliminate the “All-Night Milk Buffet”? When I go to bed (usually somewhere around midnight), I change and feed him one last time. After that he should be able to go through the night without eating, right?

I am also trying to do baby sign language with him. It is hard to remember to do it every time you talk! I think other languages are cool, though, and I would like my kids to learn while they are young. Which brings me to…

SARAH:

She is learning Spanish in preschool. Her capacity to retain information is astonishing! She has a bigger vocabulary than any 2-year-old has a right to. I get these online newsletters detailing how kids her age develop, and it says that kids her age generally use to 3 to 4 word sentences… Not Sarah! This girl speaks in full paragraphs! She tells whole stories that she makes up on the spot! I really think she is gifted. Does anyone know at what age they can test for that sort of thing?

Now the really big news…I have decided to make this holiday weekend very special by declaring it “Independence from Pull-ups” weekend!! Starting today after school, I switched her into panties. (We had informed ahead of time about what would be taking place.) I made a big hoo-ha about it and she VERY excited to be doing such a big girl thing! Pooh and Piglet resided on the front of these panties, so I spoke for them, saying, “Please don’t pee or poop on us, Sarah! We want to stay dry!” I watched her like a hawk, and asked her about every 5 minutes if she needed to use the potty. One of these 50 times, she said yes and actually did pee on the potty. Another time, she told me she had to poop, but didn’t. Ah well- better safe than sorry!

Things were going well. Then DH suggested we go out to dinner with some friends. Did we dare? I decided to chance it. He asked if I was going to keep her in panties. I was afraid, but I wanted to stay consistent, so I said yes. I brought a change of panties and clothes, just in case, but I packed them discreetly. I didn’t want to undermine her confidence. We got to the restaurant and I proceeded to ask her nearly EVERY minute if she needed to go! An accident in public would be much harder to deal with than one at home. She did say yes and one point, and again, peed on the potty! I was SO proud of my little girl for staying dry! We drove home, and as we pulled into the driveway, she said, “I need to go pee-pee!” So we were like, “OK, hurry let’s get out and get to the potty!” acting all excited. Moe lifted her out, and that’s when we realized…she had already gone. We were a little disappointed, but I knew it was inevitable. It’s going to take time, but I think she did great for her first time! Oh yeah, and the best part was once we got inside and got her wet clothes off, she went poop on the potty! So, the way it see it, it could have been much worse!! LOL!

Well, that is quite enough for one entry, so…

TALK TO ME:

Do you have any advice on how to pump without pain, and possibly how to increase milk supply?

Do you have a fitness routine? Tell me about it. Were you sedentary before and now you’re active? How did you make that transition?

Have you had a problem with too much fast-food and triumphed over it? If so, how did you do it?

How do I eliminate the “All-Night Milk Buffet” with Josh?

At what age do they test for giftedness?

Til’ Next Time…
Jennifer

HAPPY FOURTH, EVERYONE!! =D
