A few weeks ago I went to see a dentist. Funny thing is that it had been something like umm 14 years since I'd seen a one. Okay, maybe not so funny! I started having problems with my back teeth breaking off years ago, but never had much pain from it, so I did nothing about it. But last summer, while living with my parents, I had a tooth break and cause me excruciating pain. I saw my mom's dentist who told me that I'd need to have a root canal done. But in the mean time I took an antibiotic for the infection and popped some pain pills until it didn't hurt any more. Then before I knew it, Mark was here and we moved to Buffalo and then life went on. Lately I started having some pain again and I realized that it was ignorant of me to let this go on without doing something about it, so I found a dentist and made an appointment. I had my first appointment, and the hygienist looked at all my teeth and took x-rays of them. The dentist came in and checked me out too and then they made a list of what I'd need to have done. The list included a root canal, two extractions, a periodontal cleaning and several cavities filled. Several as in 8 or more! Now to look at me head on when I smile, you really wouldn't be able to tell that I have any problems. Most of the work that needs to be done is in the back of my mouth or in between my teeth where no one can see, which is so nice.
Well, on Wednesday evening while I was cooking dinner I got a call from a restaurant where I had filled out an application the week before. The lady who called me said that she had gotten excellent references about me (nice to hear) and that they were very interested in hiring me. She asked if I'd be available for an interview the following afternoon at 4 o'clock. I said that would be perfect and we said goodbye. I was THRILLED! The next morning I took the kids to school and then Mark and I headed out to my dentist appointment. I got there right on time. Mark decided to keep Matthew and Christian in the van and drive them around so that he wouldn't have to chase them all over the waiting room. I went inside and checked in with the receptionist and then sat down. Within a matter of minutes my nurse called my name and I was taken to my room. She had me sit in the chair and informed me that I'd be having a root canal, an extraction and some fillings done. "An EXTRACTION?", I said with shock. "I thought that I'd only be having the root canal done today!!" The nurse said that they had scheduled me for all of the above, but that if I didn't want to do the extraction I didn't have to. It wasn't that I was afraid or upset about it being done. I told her that I had an important job interview at 4 o'clock and that I wanted to be of sound mind. She totally understood and said that they'd hold off on the extraction until the next visit. Fhew! Can you imagine me going in for my interview all drugged up and slobbering? I'd be hired on the spot for sure! ;0)
The dentist came in only moments later and gave me several shots to numb up the top left side of my mouth. The only time I got scared/nervous about the procedure was after he had given me the shots and I could STILL feel my gums after a few minutes. The dentist walked by my room at one point and started laughing. He said that I looked like a stroke victim and I started laughing too. I asked him if he'd be giving me any more to make sure that I didn't feel the pain. He said that he didn't think I needed anything else since my lips were pretty droopy, and he walked off. Then, I got freaked! My lips certainly were numb and droopy, BUT, I could still feel my gums and I knew that once he started I'd feel pain. When he walked back in I told him that I wanted another shot to numb me some more and he said that was fine. He gave me the shot and then the nurse started filling in some of my cavities. The filling that they use now is the color of your tooth enamel, which is awesome. She used a little machine to seal it much like they use to zoom/whiten your teeth. When she was done, the dentist came in and began my root canal. I didn't feel any pain although it was really strange to feel the vibration of the drill and the tools he used. He said that because that tooth was so infected he'd have to seal it with a temporary cap for two weeks and then I'd have to come back so that he could finish it. No problem! I set up my next appointment and then we left. I then took Mark to see his doctor about his back problem. I dropped him off and ran home to change clothes for my interview. While I was reapplying my lips stick I noticed just how droopy and numb my lip really was and I hoped that it would get better in time for my interview. After picking Mark up from the doctor, I found out that he has more than likely pinched his sciatic nerve and that since his knees are bothering him again he will eventually have to have surgery on them again. Poor guy! He was sent home with strong medication to take for two weeks and see if it would help. If not, his doctor will refer him to a specialist.
I picked up Autumn and Gabe from school, took them home and then left for my interview...droopy mouthed and all. *SIGH*
The manager that I met with was a man and very kind. I explained my situation right away and he totally understood. We talked for well over half an hour and when it was over I was promised a phone call the following day. Long story short...they want to hire me!!!!! I was going to be starting today, however, since it's spring break and all of his trainers are college students, they've left town for the week. So I'll be starting next Monday. I got the night shift which is what I wanted and the restaurant is one of the finer family dining places, so I'm really relying on getting good tips. As you probably know, servers/waitresses make next to nothing as pay and rely heavily on their tips. Wish me luck! :0)
One day last week I received a large envelope in the mail from the Department of Education. It was the news I had been waiting for. The letter inside said that Matthew had been accepted to the State School for the Handicapped. We were THRILLED! They had also sent me all of the paperwork that needed to be filled out to register him, figure out his bus schedule etc. We will be getting a phone call soon setting up a time when Mark and I can bring Matthew and tour the school. I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I am that Matthew will be going to a school which only deals with children like him. We've been through so much through out his little life and it's finally time for him to get the attention that he needs and deserves. This school will not only teach him but will also provide his therapy.
While I type this, it is 3 o'clock in the morning and I am up with Matthew. He will get his sleep deprived EEG done this morning at 7:45am. Mark will be taking him in and I will be going back to bed. I've been up since 2:30 and my coffee just isn't doing the trick. I've feed Matthew some breakfast, milk and a snack already. The boy just loves to eat! ;0)
He will see his pediatric neurologist on Thursday and we'll have the results of his EEG then.
Autumn and Gabriel had their "To Bee or Not to Bee" musical at school last week and did an excellent job. At one point several boys, including Gabe went behind the risers and put on some sunglasses and grabbed their (cardboard) guitars. They came running out and were rockin' out to the music. It was adorable! On one of the other songs, Autumn got to go up onto the stage and sing with a group of girls. She did such a great job! :0) They are off this week on spring break and I'm very happy about that. I love having my kids home with me and they love being here. This week I'll be watching my nephews for a few days and Autumn and Gabe are really happy about that. They love having their cousins over to play. The weather this week is suppose to be warm and sunny which will make playing outside so much fun for them.
Alrighty, I'd better go get another cup of coffee and try my best to stay awake. It's well worth it of coarse. Anything for my children!
Take care~
