Hey everyone,
Sniff sniff, sniffle, siffle
So we are now into week three of this stupid cold/cough. It’s almost like we keep passing it around and around. I have graduated to the Kleenex with lotion. My mom and dad were supposed to come for a visit this weekend but because of mom’s illness, colds can be deadly. So no visit this time. I was SO looking forward to a weekend of shopping – I need some new clothes.
Do any of you watch What not To Wear? I am addicted to that show. And I learned something about the way I dress. I am very short waisted and fairly well endowed. I could also stand to lose 15 lbs! They had a woman on with similar issues, and they commented that the worst fashion mistakes for this body shape is a) tucking clothes in and b) buying short shirts. It occurred to me that all of my casual shirts just reached my beltline (I never tuck things in, I know better than that). I immediately tried everything on only to realize that my work clothes, with hip reaching tops, made me look so much slimmer. So I pretty much packed up all of my casual clothes for charity. But uh oh – now I need some clothes. And my mom and I are a great shopping team!
Winter Wonderland
I can’t say I’m surprised that we are all keeping this cold. Our weather has been NUTS. Eighty one day, then SNOWING the next. Yes you read correctly folks – snow. And not a little bit, this was the kind that stuck to the ground. I took a photo of Sam’s baby pool now filled with the white fluffy stuff – it looks so incongruous. The only thing that proves we didn’t have a pool out in December is that the leaves are still on the trees. At least they were. And my garden is still all in bloom. At least it was. Guess what I’ll be doing this weekend?
Sleep Issues Continue
Sam has, in general, been back to his normal happy self this week. The obsession with the dog leashes continues, but I guess that’s harmless enough. But we are back to bedtime struggles. OK – I think I’ve written this before – but Sam ALWAYS cries when I put him to bed. No matter how much love and cuddles, he will always cry. Well, this week he’s been crying hard – usually for about 10 minutes, but the other night it was half an hour! He starts to whimper as soon as I get him in his PJs. I assume this is another phase, but I wish there was SOMETHING I could do to make him go down without crying. Well, if he had his way he’d be allowed to stay up all night, but I am firm about bedtime -- he needs the rest and we need the time to ourselves. Any suggestions?
I did think that maybe he was getting scared of the dark. In Calgary, it doesn’t really get dark until midnight in the summer, so he was going down in a light room. I had the blinds pulled, but it was still light. Well, now that fall is upon us – it is pitch black at 8 pm when Sam goes down. So I bought this little lamp which has all the power of a nightlight. I turn it off when I go to bed. He’s only cried for about 5 minutes the last couple of nights, I have no idea if that has anything to do with it. DH is afraid that we will MAKE Sam afraid of the dark if he’s never exposed to it. So now I’m all worried about that. Sheesh.
Speaking of DH – he got called away on a business trip a couple of days ago. I have a whole new appreciation for single moms – I can’t imagine being the sole parent day in and day out. Sam’s been good, but all the same, I like it when DH is here. He found out today that he has to stay another day – with some luck he might get in at midnight tonight?? Oh, and here’s the kicker – I am in the middle of my cycle!! Today is CD14. I took the Clomid this month and it killed my stomach – I spent days in the washroom. And all for nothing? I am using an OPK and I don’t have any signs of O yet, so I guess it is fortuitous that I am going to O late this month – I hope! What a pain.
What I he into now?
So what is your toddler into these days? Sam just started getting into things. I’d love to hear your horror stories on this subject. Sam has free reign in our house as it is completely toddler proofed. Well, the other day it was a tad too quiet so I went upstairs to check it out. Sam was in his room (with the door closed!) and he had emptied a box of Kleenex. He just figured out how to blow his nose (three weeks with a cold will do that to a guy) and he’s now fascinated with Kleenex. So he had also blown his nose on most of these. He had also taken down his wipes and had wiped his bum (his jeans) with them all, so his pants were wet. He had opened his dresser drawer and had emptied all of his pants, and placed all of his diapers in there. He had somehow gotten the knobs off of the drawers and after careful searching, I found the knobs in the now empty Kleenex box. He was up there, what, 10 minutes? There was also a pervasive odor in my kitchen that was getting worse. I finally found the culprit in Sam’s “safe” cupboard. He had placed a full sippy cup of milk in a Thermos. Who knows when. Let’s just say the whole cup got thrown out.
Those darn kids
You know – every now and again – when I write about the things that Sam does that drives me crazy, I think there are some cute things he does that just warms my heart. These are small things, but I love them! When I pick up Sam from the dayhome I walk in and his dayhome provider says, “Sam, mommy’s here.” He can’t see me – I am down a level of stairs. All I hear is YAY YAY YAY as he comes running around the corner clapping, laughing and yelling YAY! What a way to make you feel good.
Also when I started brushing Sam’s teeth way back when I would say, once we were done, “what nice breath, give me a kiss.” This used to result in me kissing him. Now as soon as he is done brushing he gets this big grin and gives me a big fat kiss – every night before bed. This mitigates, somewhat, the scream fest that follows.
All the best.
Jenn and Sam
