Hey Everyone,

Since I last left you, my dear little petrie dish has brought home one nasty cold. Ah, the joys of daycare. I have to have a little rant here on our medical system, so please bear with me. Sam came home on a Thursday with a fever. He had a cold that kept getting worse, and then came the cough, and by Monday he still had the fever. So we finally decided to bring him to the doctor. I brought him in on the (holiday) Monday to the local walk-in clinic. The dr. there was concerned about his rattling chest and so she sent us to the children’s hospital for x-rays. My DH brought him to that appt. After going through the trauma of a chest x-ray (Sam did not at all like the restraints!) the tech says that the x-ray is not clean at all and that DH really should wait for a Dr. before going home, instead of getting the results from the clinic the next day. So they wait, and wait and wait. And wait some more. Four hours later a Dr. says that we had an overzealous tech and that the x-ray was perfectly clear. That’s good news, but a pain in the ass – and WAY past Sam’s bedtime.

Fast forward to the next Thursday – Sam has still got a fever and is still hacking up a storm. And did I mention by this time we all sounded like two pack a day smokers? Anyway – 8pm at night I get a call from the clinic saying they just (just??) got the x-rays and that they want to see Sam that night. Now, Sam was in his PJs like most 17 month-olds at that time of night. He was reading books with dad and getting ready for bed. But because they sounded so urgent – we rushed down there, PJs and all. It turns out that he has bronchiolitis, and that the only treatment is an inhaler. And we had to rush for that? I was glad to have it – it really helped with the wheezing, but MAN – what a runaround. He’s much better now. Mom and dad, however, still spend every night coughing up their lungs.

There has been another, slightly unpleasant side effect to his getting sick. Sam has discovered his will. Now Sam has been a docile child – to the extreme – up until now. Never had a tantrum, never cared if toys are taken or if he gets shoved by other kids. The only time he cried was when he was put in his crib at night – and that only lasted a minute or two.

But now, well, now he’s different. His favorite word is NO – and he uses it all day long. He cries bloody murder if you commit some heinous offense like, say, take the dog leashes away so he can eat. The dog leashes are his obsession – every morning he comes down and bangs on the closet door where they are kept. If he doesn’t like something – you know it. If you are giving him too much/not enough attention, he lets you know. He doesn’t get mad – he gets upset. The incessant whining, no’s and crying is driving me nuts. He also cut three molars while sick and his eyeteeth are coming through. So I should cut him some slack. But I am SO not ready for the terrible twos – not at not even 18 months of age.

Sam had a bit of a growth spurt over the summer. I am not sure how long he is, but he weighs 22 lbs now. He was wearing his 6-12 month clothes since last fall – he got a whole year out of his stuff! But I am actually having a hard time deciding what size clothes to buy the kid for fall. 12-18 month clothes fit him very well, with only one turn in the cuff. But he is almost 18 months old and I want his fall clothes to last until next summer. So I thought I’d get him 18-24 month clothes – skip the 12-18 month wardrobe altogether. Well, tops will do – I have to turn them up a few times in the sleeves, but this way they’ll last. But Sam has the shortest legs. I have to literally roll up the pants past the knees – half the length. So even though I feel I am being wasteful – all his new pants are 12-18 months – and they are still plenty long. What do you guys do? Do you get things insanely big? Now, I am not a snob or anything – but all of Sam’s clothes are from Gymboree, Baby Gap and Old Navy. I just like their styles and they last. Plus we don’t have the baby clothes selections that the U.S. has. So they all fit pretty much the same – Gap are a tad longer. Ah – the deep, deep things I worry about. I just want to stretch a dollar far – but not so that the dollar falls off. Yeah I know – not a metaphor but I tried.

OK – here’s my other deep, deep question. When do you stop feeding kids baby cereal – and do you have to stop? Sam eats all the food we eat for his lunch and supper. But the kid LOVES baby oatmeal cereal. He eats a bowlful of that every morning, along with a bowlful of yogurt and some Cheerios to munch on. I know I am sacrificing variety, but he scarfs it in the morning. Do you HAVE to stop at 18 months like the box says? He doesn’t seem to like real oatmeal at all; he just likes the baby stuff. He’s also just started eating by himself – and like everything else these days – just having the spoon in our hand will cause tears. Grrrr. All the same, I’m glad he’s figured out the spoon.

As for TTC – well, my last non-Clomid cycle was a bust. And I had a 17 LP so that’s just not normal. I took my first Clomid today. So far I haven’t grown horns or jumped in the lake to cool off – so far so good.

All the best,
Jenn and Sam
