Collin is 2 years old
I’m 17 weeks pg

One week from today is our ultrasound so we’re very excited for that! I keep having dreams that this baby is a girl so I’m about to jump out of my skin wondering. I’ve always said that it makes no difference to me what gender this baby is, I just want a healthy, full term beautiful baby. Collin is still insisting he wants a baby sister, even though we keep telling him how much fun he’ll have with a little brother. He’s not falling for it. Our ultrasound is at 2:30pm next Friday and we’d like to take Collin with us so he can see but we figured it would probably be best not to in case he gets antsy and bored during the visit. Those ultrasound visits can take quite awhile so I wouldn’t expect Collin to sit there being patient the whole time. We’ve decided to just make it an “us” day and go and have a nice celebratory early dinner after the ultrasound.

My MIL is coming over to watch Collin for us but she thinks that Mark and I are going to a company-sponsored luncheon for employees and their spouses. If she knew we were going in for the ultrasound she’d probably bug us about it before we had chance to tell everyone else and we’re not telling his family until Sunday. Mark’s family is so small that we thought it would be nice if we told them all at once. Mark’s brother and his family come to MIL’s each Saturday afternoon, but since I’ve already made plans for that Saturday, we have to wait until Sunday to tell everyone. This is why we are keeping it a secret – MIL could never hold her tongue for two full days! We’ve told them our ultrasound is for Monday, that way they won’t have the opportunity to even ask. Sunday we are meeting at a restaurant for lunch and we’ll tell everyone then. We plan on taking a helium balloon (either It’s a Boy or It’s a Girl) and putting it in a large gift sack. We’ll let Collin open it for everyone before we eat lunch. I thought that was a fun way of doing it.

I’ve been feeling the baby move more and more. Sometimes it’s a little squirm other times it’s a jab when I’m sitting or laying wrong. I can’t wait until Collin can feel the baby move. I’m sure he’ll love it.

It’s been so hot here lately that we’ve been spending most of our days in the cool house. I hate to say it but we’ve been watching a lot of TV. I let Collin watch Dora the Explorer and Blue’s Clues in the morning, then in the late afternoon while I’m making dinner, I’ll let him watch Clifford the Big Red Dog and Sesame Street. It’s all good educational shows but it still seems like too much television. During the afternoon we turn off the TV and listen to music. Collin loves this and runs around the living room dancing, singing and jamming out.

Collin loves to be outside but with temperatures near 100 (it was over 101 yesterday) and the heat index at 105 it doesn’t seem right to be outside. During the late afternoon when the sun is positioned over our house so the house shades the front yard, we’ll go out and I’ll let Collin play with the hose. He loves to hold it, drink from it, water my plants and splash around. He especially loves it when I hold the hose and spray it all over while yelling, ‘it’s raining, here comes a downpour!” He’ll run around, giggle and get drenched in the cold water. When I stop he’ll yell, “mommy make another downpour.” We’ll do that for about an hour or two then come inside to change, rest and have a snack. He’s content with that but I still wish it weren’t so hot so we could at least play for a while or take a walk. Speaking of walking – we have no back yard neighbors because our neighborhood back right to an open field park. There’s only a slide, a set of swings, a smaller toddler slide, a baseball diamond and soccer posts so it’s not that exciting of a park but it’s so nice to look out the back yard and see a nice green field and lots of big trees. No houses, no streets, no traffic, no nosey neighbors. At the most you’ll see a couple of people walking through the park, walking their dogs or playing Frisbee. Once in awhile the elementary schools will hold a soccer practice there, but normally it’s pretty quite and low-key back there.

Yesterday I heard lots of loud noise coming from the park so I looked out our bedroom window. There was a huge tractor-looking machine digging up the entire perimeter of the park. I was wondering what was going on so I called the city and they told me they are putting in a walking/jogging trail around the park. How nice! I’m very excited about being able to take Collin out in, basically our back yard, for walks during the comfortable fall days and then being able to take both kids out this spring. It will also be nice that Collin can learn to ride his bike or learn to roller skate or roller blade without having to worry about cars and traffic. The only thing I’m not crazy about is the trail comes within about 8 feet of our back fence and I know our dog will just go nuts seeing all those people/kids/dogs that will be that close to our yard. Our fence is a chain link and since we have a gigantic back yard, it would just cost too much to put in a privacy fence so we are looking to plant some privacy hedges next spring. Someday when we have several thousand dollars (ha!) maybe we can look into a privacy fence, but I also like being able to look out and see the field/park. I think the hedges will be look really nice, especially if we get a kind that bloom in the spring and change to a nice crimson in the fall. It will definitely add some beauty to the yard while giving us a bit of privacy.

I don’t imagine I’ll post another entry until after our ultrasound next Friday so please wish us luck! Friday is the ultrasound, Saturday one of my best friends is coming up and we’re meeting for lunch and going to paint pottery (girls day, yay!), then Sunday we are meeting Mark’s family for lunch. I’ll post sometime next weekend to let you all know how our ultrasound went and if this little angel is a boy or girl. Any guesses?

Signing off for now,

~Jennifer
