4/06/03 My Birthday Surprise ~ (A Little Late)

I received some money from my parents and Andrew informed me that he was planning a surprise for my birthday. The catch was that I couldn’t spend any money and that I had to wait until this weekend because he wasn’t off until today. Ok, it was hard but I did it.

On Friday night, he came home and said that he had been planning to take me to Six Flags in St. Louis but the weather forecast was so bad, that he wanted my input. (Sleet and snow!!!) But still, I was nearly giddy! A mini-vacation! How cool! Anyway….so we talked about it and he suggested Worlds of Fun in Kansas City. (Sounded good to me.) Andrew made the hotel reservations on Saturday morning and left for work. I had a MILLION things to get done that day in order for us to leave on time. (We were leaving just after he got off at 6pm. ROAD TRIP!!!!!) After dropping the kids off his parents’ house, we raced home to get a few things together for the night. We ended up on the road by 7:30 that evening. Our hotel reservation was at a great rate through Expedia at the Doubletree hotel. So, knowing that they would need to know we were checking in late, I called them. Not knowing I had the WRONG Doubletree hotel, they told me that they did not have our reservation and that we were basically SOL. *Uh oh..* So, for 2 ½ hours, we debated on whether we should even BOTHER to go to the hotel at all and maybe just find a different one on the way. We got lost in KC and ended up on the wrong side of town promptly around the same time our “Check Engine” light came on in our year-old car. By this time, the temperature outside had dropped about 20 degrees and we were lost, tired, and upset about our reservation AND the car. We finally found the area that our hotel is in thinking we better just show up and demand to speak with the manager. We couldn’t find the street that it was on, so I called them again. She tells me that I am about 45 minutes away from their location and I started thinking that something was fishy. I explained to her about the previous conversation and our lost reservation, and she finally ASKS me if I am even booked at the Doubletree downtown. I told her that no, we had a room reserved at the one in Overland Park. She says to me, “OH!!! Let me give you that number.” (OMG! What a mess. By this time, it’s midnight.) We called the OTHER number and Andrew checked to make sure they had us. Sure enough, our reservation was intact. We asked for directions and showed up dead tired around 12:45AM. It was quite a night, but we had a great time. We explored downtown KC on Sunday since it was just too cold to go to World of Fun and KC has this great indoor walkway that links Union Station and several different hotels and shopping areas. So we took pictures, shopped around, enjoyed each other’s company, and PIGGED OUT!!! It was great! I enjoyed being away, even if it was just for one night. (Thanks HONEY!)

PS…Our car is fine. The light came on because I didn’t screw the gas cap on properly when I filled up. It was just unnecessary worry and stress while we were trying to have a good time.

4/12/03

It’s been quite a week, and I am officially on the hunt for another job. I interviewed within the company, which is huge by the way, at the other hospital location. I am waiting for a phone call back. I called the Unit Manager on Friday and had to leave her a voice mail. I guess we will see what comes of it.

Today, the hospital put on a K9 Karnival to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network. It was SO much fun!!! Each doggie contestant and their owners paid $10 to get in and they had a bunch of games, races, contests, etc., to enter. Well, I decided that I would take Gabby (my Great Dane mix) and enter her just for fun. I took the boys with me because I thought they would have fun too. (Hmmm, after the first 5 minutes, they were “bored.”) Anyway, Gabby did great. We entered a race called “Fetch & Drop” in which the owner and dog try to fetch as many toys as possible and bring them back to a designated area within 2 minutes. Whichever dog had the most, won. Well, Gabby won the first race, so we competed with another winner, but she was VERY tired by that time. So we lost the second race. We also raced in a Dog/Companion Comedy race and we won TWICE on that one, but lost the very last race to a Great Dane. Go figure!!! We entered an “Inner Beauty” contest in which you were able to take your dog and “show off” for the judges by doing tricks. I have to say, we wowed the judges in this one. I had Gabby do her Sit, Drop, Sit, Wave Bye-Bye routine, which is a breeze for her. Everyone was amazed and we won second place! It was tons of fun and we raised a lot of money for those kids. What better way to have a fundraiser??? Every dog owner likes to show off his or her dog and they will pay money to do it, too. I thought it was very cool.

I guess that’s all for now. I will update when I have more news. Until next time,

Heather
