July 15, 2004

15th July, 2004

It’s been a week of firsts for us. Scarlet Poppy’s first laugh. Her first ‘raspberry’. Pixie Bella’s first shower, believe it or not. And her first black eye, most unfortunate. My first lap-top computer, yum, yum! And my first foray into the land of the Blogs!!

Scarlet Poppy is 3 months, 1 week old, and is starting to develop ‘real’ personality. I know I’ve called her sweet-natured and mellow, but you must remember that it is in comparison to Pixie Bella as a baby, who was the Queen of touchy crankiness. But Scarlet is really quite feisty when she wants to be, and her personality is beginning to shimmy and shake a little more these days. She shines the brightest when she’s tired. When Scarlet is tired she comes into her own. It’s like all her inhibitions fall away and she shimmy’s into the spotlight. When she’s tired she babbles and squeals and throws her little legs around like there’s no tomorrow. One minute she’ll be crying and cranky and a second later she’ll turn on the charm, burst into milky grin and start ‘ah-goo-ing’ at you. Her wild side comes out when she’s tired, I’m convinced she’s going to be a wild-child party animal when she grows up. Think Mars conjunct Venus in Gemini, all those budding astrologers out there, and you’ll realize as I have, that come Scarlet’s teenage years, we won’t stand a chance! The longer this girl stays up, the more gregarious and charming and hilarious she becomes. It’s a rather dangerous combination I fear!

She laughed for the first time this week. I mean, REALLY laughed. I was dabbing a tissue over her mouth (she dribbles milk all the time) and singing her some meaningless ridiculous little song and there it was, a giggle! It came bubbling up, followed by another, and Pixie and I burst into peals of excited laughter ourselves, each vying to bring one more giggle to the surface. After a while Scarlet became self-conscious and completely forgot how to laugh, but we didn’t care, our baby laughed for real at 3 months and she’ll soon be doing it all the time! How cool is that?

She also started that stage of blowing wet bubbles with her mouth all day long. I remember it was Pixie’s favourite party trick too, at this age, and it’s so cute. But all cuteness aside, Miss Scarlet has a feisty side that is coming to light more and more. She can ‘bark’ a command with the best of them, and will holler and yell if she’s unhappy about something. She still doesn’t cry a lot, but she certainly can yell. She hates being wrapped for her naps these days, and will bark and struggle until those arms break free and come up to her mouth, where she will proceed to slurp all over them and keep herself awake. Then she’ll get cranky and yell again, because her hands are wriggling around and she can’t sleep.

The other night, as I’d just settled Scarlet back to sleep after her 2am feed, I heard a blood-curdling scream from Pixie’s room and almost died of fright. I rushed in to find Pixie crying/screaming and stumbling about and I thought it was another night-terror, of which she’s had quite a few over the years. But when she looked up at me I saw she had blood streaming down her cheek. In one of those difficult (that’s an understatement, eh?) mothering moments where your heart has jumped into your throat but you have to remain calm and clear-headed, I woke Jay and lumbered down to the kitchen with Pixie screaming in my arms. I had blood all over my pyjamas and Pixie looked like she’d been in a train wreck. Turns out she had fallen out of bed and cut the corner of her eyelid on her wooden bedside table. She woke up the next morning with a black and blue eye, and a small red cut, but thankfully no real damage to her eye. But be warned about bedside tables if you have one of those kids who tosses and turns all night and sometimes can be found sleeping sideways across the bed with no blankets on!!

Pixie had her first ever shower last night. Can you believe that? I don’t know why it’s taken us so long to get her to shower, after all it’s a thousand times quicker and easier than a bath, but there you have it. I guess it’s probably because Pixie had a water phobia until she was about 2-3 years old, and it was hard enough getting her into the bath most of the time. Now she loves the water, thank goodness and she looked so damn cute and ‘little’ in the big shower with her hair piled under a shower cap and the water tricking all over that little body of hers. When you’ve got a little baby in the house you often forget just how small and cute 4-year-old’s are, they usually look big and threatening and hairy! Ha!

So, do you think I look rather sexy this week? I should think so, after all I’m traveling this cyber-highway in a sexy new silver laptop! Yes, now I can surf those waves with the best of you, rather than clunking around in the beat-up old bomb of last week. Yes, I was the one blocking the traffic, chugging along blowing reams of blue smoke in your face. I’m having such fun with this sexy new machine that I’m thinking I might just have to start my own BLOG! Has interesting possibilities and who can resist the title, ‘Blogger’. Oh yes, I want to be a ‘blogger’ when I grow up! I think I might just carve out my own space in Blogdom, so stay tuned for more titillating hints in that direction…

Have a good week, Eloise.
