Christa's Diary EntriesDiary Navigation: |
November 9, 2003
Don was released from the hospital Saturday morning. We knew the doc was thinking of releasing him Saturday but we figured it would be in the afternoon. It was 8:30 am when Don called and said they were doing the paperwork to send him home. Of course the plan was to have someone watch the kids while I went to get him. That didn’t happen, so Austin and Noah went with me. We are all home, Don is resting allot. And I am just trying to keep Noah from using dad as a jungle gym. At the age of 2 he just doesn’t understand why he can’t just jump on dad or why dad can’t pick him up. At discharge they told us Don will have to be on a low sodium diet, walk 30 minutes a day everyday from here on out, take his blood thinners, and right now no lifting anything over 10 pounds. He also has a medical alert bracelet he has to wear, therapy starting the end of next week, which I have to option of doing the exercises with him during that time. This is a life-changing event. Not only is Don trying to heal, we will have to change our meals. Anyone out there know of any low sodium recipes? If so please let me know.
Parent/Teacher Meeting
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well I had my P/T meeting Thursday. Last year we found out Austin was ADD, not an extreme case, just mild I guess you could say. So the doctor and I talked and decided since the school he would attend this year has more aides to help the kids that need it we would see how things progressed. We have been working with him at home even more so this year. He is in a level 1 reading class, and his teacher is doing more 1 on 1 with him. Well at the meeting this week I found out that meds might be what we have to do for Austin. The teacher said she loves having Austin in class, he is very sweet, has beyond great manners, all the kids like him and he is VERY mature for his age. She is concerned, as we are, about his ability to get distracted way too easy; his attention is just not there. His fine motor skills are not where they should be and she pointed something out, and it has been happening at home, that he will zone out. Almost as if he was in a state of hypnosis or off in another world. It’s like he goes into this “state” and can’t hear anything around him. Then he will kind of shake his head and he’s “back with us”. So to speak. The teachers are just as concerned about this as I am. His reading teacher did say Austin has a huge imagination. And is good at coming up with sentences, usually the first one done with that everyday. His reading still needs work but has come along way from the beginning of the year. I don’t know if this is true but I heard that ADD kids fine motor skills are usually not as developed as a child that is not ADD. Don’t know if that is true or not. So going to do some research! I hate the fact he may have to go on meds. But I want to do the best for my son.
Thanksgiving
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Looks like this year we will do thanksgiving at our house. Don can only be in a car for short periods of time; so running to all the family’s houses is out of the question. We are hoping he will be better by Christmas. Can you believe the holidays are already here?! This year has flown by, and so much as happened in our family, as you can tell. What will next year bring? I know for 1 a skinner mom and dad. I have lost 8 pounds, and in a size smaller clothes. Also lost in inches, Don has lost 19 pounds since the operation. I knew his stomach looked smaller right after surgery! The doctor said there was allot of air in there. Also with his diuretics he will lose more weight. His appetite will not be up to par for about a month. He almost eats like a rabbit.
Noah
~~~~~
Well not much is going on with my little guy. He still is not near as big as Austin was at this age. Noah weighed 27 ¼ pounds at the 2-year check up. With all the measurement, which I will get on here later, he was just below the 50 percentile on height and weight and just above the 50% on head circumference. After Christmas we are weaning him off the binky. It’s time too, but with dad trying to heal I don’t think this is the best time to take a binky away. Too much fussing and screaming would be going on. And that would just be out of Noah, not to mention my stress would fly through the roof. Haa!
I just want to say thank you to all my family and friends that were there for us. You all are such a blessing.
Don’s work was so awesome too, and the stuff they sent, the visits, and the support was beyond what you would find from a boss. A very family based company. So many offering child-sitting services for us. Food, and the list goes on. We are truly blessed by all that are around us.
