Christa's Diary Entries

February 23, 2004

I had the parent/teacher meeting today. She went on and on about how sweet Austin is and how she loves having him in her class. BUT...she is worried about his academics. Last year we talked with the doctor about his ADD and how things were not going well with this and school. So because of his insurance we had to do the whole steps, starting with Ritilin. Though I was not happy with putting him on this we had to try. 3 or 4 weeks later (the doctor said in 2 weeks we should see a difference) there was no change, except his appetite had decrease a lot and the insomnia kicked in. After asking the teacher if she had seen a difference, her answer was not really, I pulled Austin off the stuff. Today I was told that in the state of New York any child labeled with ADD has to see a phycoligist (sp) or a pediatric Nerologist in combination with any meds. This being said and last year someone in the medical and teaching field mentioned having Austin seen by a Nerologist. Especially when he was doing the whole "spacing out" spells. Which he doesn't do anymore, that I have seen. Something has to be done before things get worse. I plan on talking to the doctor tomorrow about at least having a consultation with a ped. nerologist. This is a whole new world to me. Austin's fine motor skills are not developed, he is extremely easily distracted, and the list goes on. I was told about a book called Driven to Distraction. Anyone ever hear of this or read this book? I am scared, what do I need to do if the doctor says no about visiting with the ped. nero.?

On a better note, dad let the boys get a dog. YEP! I set a rule, NO PUPPIES! So we found a dog in the paper and went to check her out. PERFECT! A 9 year old bassett. She is still a little scared, but she doesn't bark often and she isn't a digger. The owner told me. So far no barks or digging out of her. Her name is Skyview's Simone. Simone for short. She loves Austin, still trying to get used to Noah. Noah follows her all over the house even when she is trying to get away from him. She loves for me and Austin to brush him. She clings to me during the day. True story: after getting her in the van last night to come home, we had to drive with all windows down! PEEEEWWWW!!! Stinky dog! I bathed her 2 times and still smell the stink. She is going to the vet tomorrow to be bathed, groomed, ears checked. I really think the smell may be those long, droopy ears. Common in bassetts. Besides that she is great, she don't jump on you or the furniture, doesn't dig, bark, howl, etc. She loves her walks, her and I took 2 short walks last night, and about 4 today. You give her half a chance and she wants out the front door to walk.

Well though the dog brings much happiness, I am still worried about my oldest, Austin, I have a lot of questions to get answered, and the doctors will love me for it ;-)
But this is my son, and I want the best for him.
