December 4, 2003
Well,I am not a grandma yet! We had such a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend together. Caitlin & Will (my 16 & 18 yr olds) rode down together and got there just ahead of the rest of us. We all trooped over to Rustys parents house and had a wonnnderful Thanksgiving feast. There was a table set up on the screened porch(this is central FL we are talking about, remember) so that some of us could eat out there and some of us in the dining room. Jacob & Susannah ate outside, along with Rusty,Will & Rustys younger sister Katie. Charles started out inside along with Rustys sister Elizabeth,Rustys mom Kay,Carrie,Caitlin and me but we soon drove him out with our birthing talk - somehow, the conversation got around to Placentas!!! Well, the birthing chat continued long into the afternoon! We finally took a break and ate our dessert and watched Santa Clause 2. We all went back to Carrie and Rustys and vegged out. The next day was an exciting day all around. The testosterone was surely flowing as the guys went out on an airboat on the Kissimee River, followed by lunch at a BBQ place followed by an afternoon of shooting clay pigeons with various firearms. We womenfolk went to a baby shower/brunch for Carrie which was great fun. My mom drove over from Tampa for the event and Charles sister Donna from Cocoa Beach,as well as my Aunt Sophy from Sebring. Susannah kind of stole the show!! She sat next to Carrie while she unwrapped the gifts and her awwws! & ohhhhs! were so cute. That evening, the mighty clay pigeon hunters and shower attenders alike enjoyed a spaghetti & meatball supper and then we all settled in and watched the extended version DVD of the Two Towers. i have to say - those Orks are some of the scariest critters around. Like something out of a nightmare. And I have to agree with Linda about Aragorn.;) That night we had a cold snap and it really started to feel like Thanksgiving! The next day Charles cousin and her husband (from NH)drove over from their timeshare near Orlando. We had a yummy pizza lunch and then donned jackets and went out to the lake where Will was fishing.Carrie & Rustys elderly neighbor,a true southern gentleman in the very best sense of the term, came out and began thrilling the northern visitors no end about the gator capturing process that took place right on his beach recently. This involved an 11 foot gator and then a couple of amaller 7 & 8 footers. He then began a conversation with Will about why he should go into the world of business & high finance (this guy is reputed to be one of the wealthiest men in FL).The air was brisk and windy and the sun was shining - another glorious day. We all watched the Finding Nemo DVD after that adventure and then Charles sister & the cousins left to drive back. Friday & Saturday nights Susannah seemed to be snoring and by Sunday afternoon I figured out she was coming down with a cold and she wasnt the only one.Sooo,we decided that we would all go back home on Sunday afternoon, that I would NOT stay until the baby comes. It was a very good thing because Susannah had a 100+ fever for Mon.& Tues. along with coughing & sneezing and I have been kind of coughy and achey. Im so glad Carrie didnt go into labor that weekend! I was kind of thinking she wouldnt with things so hectic. She looks very, compact to me. I dont expect the baby to be an 8 or 9 pounder, that is for sure. She had her midwife visit on Monday and she is still measuring kind of small,so maybe the baby will come a bit later than we thought at first. On the way home, I heard the words every mom dreads coming from Jacob, who was sitting in the back of the SUV - I think Im going to throw up! And then he promptly did,all over the place. Not a good combination with a 16 yr old on board(arent you glad you rode back with us,Cait?)! we pulled over, once we found a gas station and Caitlin & Susannah retreated out into the fresh air and sat on the back of the SUV.Meanwhile, a car pulls in containing a 1/2 dozen young fellas and they were all oogling Caitlin and that kind of thing while she was doing her very best to ignore them. After they finished gassing up,they drove out by going right past our vehicle, still staring and when they got level with the girls, Susannah began gaily waving and shouting: Goodbye!! Goodbye!! Sometimes its tough having a younger sister and brother....So now we are just popping our vitamin C and drinking our tea and trying to get quickly over this cold before the baby does come. Rusty has 2 exams next Tuesday and would like her to wait until next Wednesday, which is actually her due date. Will Amelia cooperate?? She has been engaged for about 3 weeks so it is bound to be sometime soon, any way you look at it. After all of the early labor Carrie had,its easy to feel like she is overdue or something. Well, praying that God will bless us and keep us all until next time, when I should surely be a grandma and have an awesome birthstory to share. There have been a lot of positives over at iparenting, lately, as well as some disappointments and uncertainty. So, I wanted to say congratulations but also my heart goes out to those who have suffered loss or are in the throes of waiting. Hugs,Catherine
