May 23, 2004
I realized I didn’t mention anything about my children in my introduction entry. It was a silly lack of foresight that lead to this, no doubt, since they’re the reason I’m here at MT!
Alexandria was unplanned, at least in Al’s opinion. I was on-again-off-again on BCPs, and I knew as soon as we had finished the “naughty” that I was PG. Call it intuition. I remember vividly a week or so later, as I was crawling on the floor searching for a loose hermit crab, gosh, I need to be careful, because there’s someone in my tummy! My abdomen felt fuller right away, so when I took the PG test and it came up positive, I was surprised, but not terribly. When Al came home from work that evening, I told him (as he entered the house) “You’re going to be a father!” He was shocked, but then very excited. I was at that time earning my bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. I was 20 and a sophomore. Alexandria’s due date was 12/31/99, so she was a “Millennium Baby”. I had an uneventful pregnancy, delivered in another town using a midwife (in a hospital) after a long labor with only a half a milligram of drugs in me. My water broke Christmas morning, and by 12/26/99 (at 12:47 a.m.), I had my baby girl.
After (me) longing for another baby, we finally decided to ttc. I was now 23, and attending college to earn my Master’s in Science, Teaching of Chemistry. We conceived easily and Victoria was due 12/22/02. I had an even easier pregnancy this time around with only a few oddball occurrences (such as a possible extra placenta that covered my cervix at one point). Labor began in the same pattern with Victoria that it did with Alexandria, minus the breaking water. I delivered a perfectly healthy baby girl on Friday the thirteenth, December 2002. I love December babies. I have never been pregnant in January, February, or March. I find that funny. I also have never enjoyed a calm Christmas while PG. These are things I hope to do before I hang up the “no vacancy” sign in my uterus.
Last week (Saturday evening) my folks came into town. They came for a purpose, my (finally!) graduation from graduate school. Yay, me. I went to the Chemistry convocation only. It was dull. Victoria had to be taken out, she was crying. Then Alexandria had to be taken out, because she was crying, too. They came back later, but I didn’t know it, because they were up in the balcony.
So, here I am with my Master’s degree. I’ve been searching for a teaching position. I used to care that I didn’t have a job yet, but now I don’t. I also don’t want to hear anything about how in demand science teachers are. I expected to have position by now, honestly. I’ll say this, even if I don’t by August, it’s not a big deal. Al’s income can keep us afloat, albeit not forever. We do need insurance for me and the girls, not only health but dental. The grad student insurance is PATHETIC and didn’t pay any of my routine ob-gyn visit. And I pay over $1,000 a year for what?!
So, for the first time in about 4 years, I’m enjoying a summer off with nothing to do. No classes to take, no classes to teach, just me, Al, the girls, and my sewing machine. I’m trying to rest and enjoy it, but I am stressed out for some unknown reason to me. I think I need to learn how to relax again. I’m so used to saying, “What’s next?” that I have no idea how to let go and do nothing, and enjoy it. Of course, by the time I do master that, I’ll have to get used to working again. It always seems to work out that way!
I'll try to post more regularly, but I find it's difficult. My girls (Victoria) tend to hang all over me like kudzu vines...
