August 10, 2003
This has been such a busy week, I don’t even know where to begin! It all really started on Tuesday when I was going to pick up my Mom who lives about 2 hours away so she could help me paint my bedroom. Really, I just think she wanted to make sure I was ok after the appt. with the oncologist the week before. I’ll get into that more later. I have lived in the same town, the same house for five years and my mom still can’t drive herself here. She has the worst sense of direction I have ever known! To give one good example, she has lived in the Cincinnati area all her life. When I was about 12, she was driving back from the Cincinnati airport after taking a relative to meet their flight. Well, she was almost to Indianapolis before she realized she wasn’t in Ohio! There is no hope for her, I swear lol! But I love her anyway, so I was going to pick her up. I get out to the garage and my van wouldn’t start. Grrrr! So I called Bill at the paper mill to see if I could take his Explorer. The only catch was I had to drive myself and Alaina in his old truck that I absolutely can’t stand so I could pick up the Explorer. I’m already running late, so I race to get to the mill and then realize I don’t have the spare set of keys for the E. GRrrrr! I call him so he can come out and give me his keys. I get in and realize that there is no gas. GRRrrrr! It’s now lunchtime, I have to get us lunch, and get gas, and I’m supposed to pick my mom up in an hour?!! NOT! I’m racing like a bat out of you-know-where, thinking that she’s going to be sitting there worried to death when I don’t show up for an hour. My brother is a detective in Hamilton so I call him hoping he can drive over to let her know I won’t be there til later. Thankfully, he goes to tell her. I guess it would help if I explained that she was leaving her car at her uncle’s who wasn’t home, so I couldn’t reach her by phone. I finally get there, everything was fine, so that’s all that matters. On the way home we were listening to my new favorite CD by Styx. I admit, I am a product of the ‘80’s. Minus the big hair LOL! There is a song on the cd called “Kiss your @$$ goodbye”. It’s actually not offensive and I love it. I was telling her about something that happened the week before while driving and listening to the cd. I don’t usually listen to my music loud, but I was all by myself for a change and decided to really enjoy the song. I was out in the middle of the country, no one around. This song came on and I was singing at the top of my lungs, oblivious to the surroundings. After singing the words “Kiss your @$$ good bye” I look over to my left and there is a crowd of people standing in a church parking lot, all looking at me as I go flying by! I about died!! I just thought to myself “Well so much for all those prayers that people have said for me all summer, I think those are all null and void!!”. I couldn’t help but laugh and was thankful that they didn’t know me!!
Wednesday we started painting my room. Why is it that something that seems like it’s so easy, takes so long to complete? We got most of it done that day, but then finished it on Thursday. The walls are sage green, the trim is white. The rooms in my house haven’t been touched in about 40 years, so now the room looks so clean! I bought a new comforter and valances that are a sheer burgundy fabric, trimmed in burgundy velvet, with mauve and sage flowers in burgundy velvet blocks. It looks so pretty, I’m just thrilled! One room down, 10 more to go. Ugh! I hate painting, but love the effect after it’s done. We got done painting just in time for me to take a shower and run to my appt. at the dermatologist. I had a mole removed on my leg two weeks before and would be getting the results back from the biopsy. For those of you who don’t know, I have been sick most of the summer with my lymph nodes going crazy, losing weight, fighting exhaustion, etc. My family doctor plus two other doctors all thought I had cancer. The oncologist said I did not have lymphoma, thank goodness, so the next thought was skin cancer. It was the lesser of two evils. I never thought I would see the day where I would be praying I had skin cancer! I get to his office and am shown to a room. Bill met me there for moral support. Dr. M. walked in and said he had good news and bad news. The good news was I didn’t have skin cancer. The bad news was that it was VERY close to melanoma in the pre-cancerous stage so now I have to have all moles removed that are suspicious. He removed one from my left arm this time. I asked him if this could cause my lymph nodes to go crazy and he said no. Great! I am back to square one! I do, however, think that it was related. After having the first mole removed the symptoms all disappeared. I have my energy back, no lymph nodes have popped up, and the weight is coming back (@#$% it!). So I can’t help but think it is somehow related. I am very relieved that it seems like my summer from hell is finally over and my life is getting back to normal. This will forever in my mind be my “lost” summer. It definitely makes you realize what’s important, though. To celebrate the results, we took my mom and Alaina to a restaurant in Columbus’ German Village called Schmidt’s. My heritage is German and the food at Schmidt’s is awesome! They’ve even been featured on Food Network’s “The Best Of”. They have these Cream Puffs that weigh a pound each and just melt in your mouth. YUM!! My mom left on Friday. It was wonderful having her here. We have an awesome relationship. At 35 years of age, I am still her baby. And now that I am a mom, I know exactly how she feels.
My guest room had a revolving door on it this week. On Saturday, Bill was going to a concert in Columbus so I invited my childhood bf Karen over to spend the weekend. There was a balloon regatta that was coming to our area on Saturday and we couldn’t wait to go. Unfortunately, thunderstorms moved in and the event was cancelled. So we went to plan B. We made Cincinnati style chili and rented a couple of movies. Bringing Down the House with Steve Martin and Queen Latiffah was pretty funny. We also rented How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days with Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson. I hadn’t heard any good reviews, but thought it looked cute. We laughed through almost the whole thing! It was a great rental and I would recommend it. I think even guys would get a kick out of all the stuff she put him through!
My van is still out of commission. I told Bill I thought it was the fuel pump. We went to the parts store and he bought a fuel filter but no pump. He said he was going to try one thing at a time so he wouldn’t waste money on something we didn’t need. Fine… A couple of days later he told some of the guys at work about the problem and asked what they thought it sounded like to them. They said it sounded like the fuel pump. Agh!! Of COURSE now he says HE thinks it’s the fuel pump and he’ll get it fixed this week. Oh, that’s right, honey. I never said a word…I’m just a girl…Of COURSE I don’t know what could possibly with wrong with that big metal thing I drive….what’s it called again? Oh, yeah……a VAN!!! I just wanted to smack him right upside the head! What IS it with some men not believing that a woman could know what’s wrong with a vehicle? Especially a man who would rival Tim The Tool-man Taylor in his ineptitude?! I mean, I love the man, but I definitely didn’t marry him for his handyman talents LOL! Anyway, hopefully I’ll get my van back this week. This has just given him more fuel for his argument against selling his old truck. I think it needs to go. He says he needs it as a work truck. I’ll win the argument….eventually!
You know, after reading back over everything, I realize how boring this all sounds! I have no idea what my writing style is or will be. I am so tired after all the stuff from this past week, plus AF arrived this morning (Gosh, I never thought I would put that out for all to read!!!) so all I really want to do is lay on the couch and stuff my face with chocolate! I expected her (AF) to show up, but I still hate her. I really do need to write an entry about our infertility issues and our struggle about whether to adopt or not. But I’m afraid that I would not do it justice right now. That will have to wait for another day.
School starts on the 21st, so we are preparing for that day. Alaina is so excited about starting 2nd grade. The school doesn’t post the classroom assignments until two days before school, so we have no idea who her teacher will be. I miss the days of when I was in school and they put next year’s teacher on the last report card of the year. That gave us all summer to be prepared. This way we have no idea who it will be until right before school starts. I don’t know any of the teachers, but have heard that they are all good. I sure hope so! I just bought her some jeans at The Gap for this year. I have such a hard time finding jeans that fit her waist. They are usually so baggy they almost fall off. I made the discovery of the year when I went to The Gap. They make their jeans with an adjustable elastic band inside the waist. There is a button on either side of the zipper and you cinch up the elastic until it fits their waist! Best yet, you can’t tell from the outside of the jeans so they look normal! And now she won’t have to fumble with a belt, either. I feel like an ad for them, but they were only $19.50!!! I bought her three pairs plus a pair of denim capris. Love them! She’s pretty much prepared as far as school clothes go. She just needs a winter coat. She’s had the same one from Land’s End for three years and finally outgrew it. It still looks like new, just too small. I loved it because it was a bright yellow/orange and I could pick her out of a crowd in one glance. Boy, did that come in handy!! Now she wants lavender, darn it. That will blend in with all the other coats. Maybe I can tell her they were sold out and still get her a bright yellow one instead ;-)! She’ll believe me, right?
Well, I don’t know what else I could say to make this any more boring. But this is my life. I think it’s time I end this and go stuff my face with Russell Stover’s French Mints. MMmmmmm!
So Talk To Me: Are you all ready for school this year? Do you miss buying new clothes for yourself every fall like I do? Does your dh listen to you when you know what’s wrong with something that’s broken? Do you enjoy saying “I told you so” as much as I do LOL! ;-)
Hugs,
Alicia
