My surgery
July 29, 2007
Ok the surgery is over and done with. I had the Total vaginal hysterectomy and
a bladder sling performed on July 23. I got to the hospital at 5:15 and was taken
upstairs to pre-op soon after I got there. I joked with the anesthesiologist about
how I wasn't scared of the surgery that I was afraid he was going to mess up and
I wouldn't wake up. He was really nice about it and explained everything to me
about the drugs he would be giving me. Then they wheeled me to the OR and my Dr.
walked in he said he had been trying to find me but the had me in a different
pre-op area. He held my hand until I was out and then I remember nothing until
waking up in recovery. The first thing I did was to check my stomach to see if
he had to do the TAH. I was happy but really groggy. The pain wasn't tooo bad
mostly in my back. They took me to the best room. My doctor got me into a private
suite yes a suite in the cancer center. I didn't have cancer but I loved the room.
It had a nice big bathroom and a private sitting room with a sofa bed and the
sitting room also had their own TV. They had me on morphine and I could not stay
awake. I slept almost all of the first day except for waking up to drink my mouth
was so dry. The hospital had two massage therapists come in and give me a massage
since my back was sore. It was awesome. I could hardly keep my eyes open it was
so nice.
Day 2 they took out the packing and the IV and I got up to walk. I was seriously
sore but the walking felt good. They kept trying to get me to pee and I couldn't.
My dr. that performed the TVT-O told me this would happen so I wasn't worried
but the on-call gynecology team had a meeting with my primary gynecologist and
he told them they had to let me go home that I expected this, which I did. I knew
I would probably have to cath myself. Home has been interesting. The girls want
to be on top of me all the time because they can't see the boo boo so I must not
really have one. My mom had been cathing me until she left on Friday then I had
to do it myself and I have been sleeping because all my medicine says may cause
drowsiness. Yesterday I woke at 11 was up long enough to try to pee then was back
asleep until 4 and then slept off and on until 12 when I went to bed for the night.
Percocets give me horrible nightmare/hallucinations, but they do stop the pain.
All in all I feel pretty good. I am really tired but I don't hurt I just feel
sore. I also am able to pee some on my own now which is great. Yesterday I called
the on-call gyn because I was running a low-grade fever the Dr. thought I had
a UTI from all the cathing she wanted me to double up on the antibiotic. I think
I am going to take another nap. If this post makes no sense I am sorry I am still
feeling out of it. It is hard to think clearly.
