End Of Year Stuff

May 11, 2007

I love and hate the end of the school year. I love the idea of a whole summer full of nothing but fun. I hate all the hectic days leading up to the last day of school. On my end we have been having a lot of field trips. Since I last updated we have been to the fish hatchery, the helicopter at the hospital and the city park. I have taken training on making books and I have been piecing together the book my class did this year on the Runaway Bunny. Each child took bunny home for the weekend and wrote about what they did then I copied everyone's story and bound it with a cute cover so they will always have it. I have also been doing plaster hand prints and getting the program ready for their end of year ceremony. I am also getting new carpet on Monday (Happy Mother's day to me) so this weekend is being spent moving furniture and ripping up carpet. I know that they will take up the carpet but my husband wanted to do it himself so we could vacuum before they lay the new carpet down.  I also got elected Secretary for the PTA for next year. I knew I was going to be but now it is official.

Abbey has had a field trip to a bread factory she thought that was cool. She liked the bus ride except she said she fell asleep. I take her to school and pick her up so she never gets to ride the bus. Abbey had a Speaker come to the school and do a yo-yo demonstration, which I thought was cool except that he also sold yo-yos for a few days after the demonstration. I am not against selling items at school but I believe that the school should get a cut and as far as I know we saw no money from this. I really hate that because Abbey attends if not the then the next to poorest school in the district. Not that the school itself is run down it is nice and well cared for and it has excellent teachers but we are in a poor area and a lot of the children don't have extra money for things like yo-yo's especially when it comes on a week that they are also selling mothers day flowers. The children feel peer pressure to do it all have the yo-yo and buy the flowers and it saddens me that not everyone can do that. I gave Abbey money this morning but it made me sick at my stomach to think of the ones who will be left out. That's why I like the work that the PTA does. Our school's committee works hard to raise money throughout the year to help. We raise money so all classes can have weekly readers free to the students and that they can pay some on field trips to lower the costs for parents. They do a lot more but at the moment that is standing out. Her last day is a week later than mine. Then we are going away for the weekend. We are visiting the zoo and to an amusement park. I said we needed to get the trip over with so I can enjoy it I wouldn't enjoy myself as much right after the surgery. Right now Abbey is spending the weekend in Tennessee at another Civil War reenactment. She really enjoys going to these things. This time they are actually camping out. They have a tent and a sleeping bag. I made sure to pack her allergy medicine. I can't believe I am sending her to sleep outside for two days.  We had fun during her birthday trip. We went to build a bear workshop and she built a hello kitty and dressed it in a hello kitty outfit. Emmy made a black bear and named it Jack Black and dressed it in a spider man outfit. Abbey's friend made a bear and dressed it as a cheerleader. Then we went to Chuck E. Cheese and to the movies to see Spider Man. It was fun.

Emmy was student of the week last week. She had her picture in the paper.   She has also been a very moody child. She wakes up cranky and she whines a lot. I remember Abbey did the same thing at this age. I just hope she grows out of it soon. If I am remembering correctly it didn't last long with Abbey. So I am keeping my fingers crossed. She can be the sweetest child in the world and then at a moments notice she turns. She knows her days of the weeks and the months of the year. I am very proud. She can sing about any song that you ask her to sing.

Here is the picture of Emmy in the newspaper
