Celebrating 1 year of healthy living with Diabetes!
December 29, 2006
Griffin was diagnosed on December 22, 2006, with Type I or juvenile diabetes. So we decided to try to have a positive commemoration of what was actually a couple of not fun days in the hospital. We spent the afternoon going to see Santa and then we went to dinner at McDonald's (surprisingly, Happy Meals are actually not that bad carb-wise as long as you get chicken nuggets and white milk and don't get dessert), and we did go to Ben and Jerry's and then out to see Charlotte's Web. It was pretty fun. I think it was good to include Daisy in all of this as well, because there have been a number of times when she had to go without, say, a juice box because we only had them for if Griffin went low, and we pretty much don't ever have cakes, cookies, candies, pie, low-fiber bread, you name it. We bought one box of candy canes this year and we would each share one-split one candy cane between four people!--but after that, that was it for the Christmas candy at our place. We did make a few cookies and my mom gave us some cookies, but that was it for the cookies for the year. We rely on 4 oz Juicy Juice boxes for low blood sugars because they are the right amount of carb and work quickly. Luckily Griffin only seems to need one every few days.
The power came back on after four days without, and then the rest of the holidays were thankfully fairly uneventful, except we had a nephew/cousin born in Boulder on the 13th. Andrew is healthy, but mom had a hard time, and plus they keep getting pounded with feet upon feet of snow.
We are still trying to get pregnant. I feel particularly fertile this month, I don't know why! Richard and I tried to make sure to get things going every couple of days. For this cycle, I got my period on the 13th (28 day cycle) and then we baby-danced on the 21st, 23rd, 26th, and 28th. Hopefully that ought to do it, but I am not taking any chances and will probably have to seduce him again tomorrow, because I just have no clue when I'm ovulating. I felt like it was maybe going on on the 21st, but then suddenly on Christmas and again yesterday I felt like we better have a roll around in the hay or whatever. I couldn't get him to stay awake on Christmas Eve or Christmas--both of those days we stayed up late with the kids.
Anyway, keep praying for us! If I get pregnant this month, the due date would be my birthday, September 19th, which might be fun.
