Griffin did get the stomach flu

February 23, 2007

I forgot to write in my earlier entry from this week that Griffin did end up getting the stomach flu and so did Richard. Right before the end of school on Monday, Griffin said to his teacher, "I need my father immediately." She is one of those teachers who is a lot of fun but not apt to take little children or anything much else really seriously, so she just said "Well, he'll be here in ten minutes, why don't you wait?" Then he said "But I'm going to vomit!" and she said "Well, maybe you will and maybe you won't, but at any rate, school's almost over." At which point he upchucked all over. It was fairly dramatic, apparently. Of course, this was not an immediate emergency for her the way it is for us. Since he had long-acting insulin in his system to "cover" his lunch so that he doesn't get a shot at lunch, there was some concern that his blood sugar would dip low enough to make him pass out, especially since he couldn't hold anything down. Richard called the endocrinologist as soon as they all got home, and they said that as long as he kept some of his lunch down he didn't need IV glucose (despite all appearances, it would seem Griffin did keep some of his lunch down), and that we should expect his blood sugar to rise once his liver kicked in and started releasing sugar that way, so we had to watch for ketones. So what happened was that Griff's sugar bottomed out around 100, which is totally a normal level, and then started to climb out of the normal range again by around 9 pm. So he didn't eat dinner and didn't get a dinner shot, but I did give him his 24-hour bedtime shot to keep him from going high. Then he had a little Gatorade at midnight which he managed to keep down, so that was good (especially since he woke up at 65--which is just a bit low for him--our family runs a little low). Except by this time Richard was throwing up as well--he threw up in front of the class he teaches Monday nights. He started feeling sick in the early evening, but still ate dinner (I never know why he picks the grossest things to eat right before he knows he's going to hurl). Then he made it through the first hour of class before sending everyone out so he could make it to the trash can in time. He said that after he left class that a guy from the class was standing outside talking on his cell phone in Chinese in a clearly very amused voice. So that was funny. But point being, Griff made it through his first stomach virus okay.
