Healthy five year old
November 11, 2006
(Written a few weeks ago. I thought I'd finish it up later but time seems to be at a premium these days so I'll post this and hopefully more soon)
Ella had her five year well baby check up last week. After so many years of being the smallest in her (class she has now caught up and surpassed her peers. I could tell she did a lot of growing this year as over the summer many of her dresses seemed to turn into mini dresses nearly overnight. She measured in at 43 inches (60% percentile) and 38 pounds (40% percentile). So she is long and lean. I'm not surprised that she's been growing a lot as I am fairly tall and had been expecting that she would be taller rather then shorter. I am also not surprised that she is lean as she continues to be quite a picky eater. I also suspect that she isn't thrilled with my cooking as she seems to eat more at other people's then she does when we are home. Whatever, though, she always has a healthy option and I make sure to offer at least one thing I know she will eat. It's not like I'm starving the kid or anything.
She was scheduled to have a bunch of shots this appointment but the doctor said he recommended we wait until next summer when she is about to start kindergarten. He said that with 'highly compliant' parent's (ie, he knows I'll come back) this is when he prefers to do the shots. I felt like such a geek when he called me that! I did get her a flu shot though.
So all in all, we determined that I have a great, perfectly healthy little five year old on my hands. Yay us! The only thing that came up was when I pointed out that Ella still has the same lisp that she's had since she learned to talk. All her other sounds are fine and I had thought that in time she would lose the lisp but alas she has not. The dr. said lisps generally correct themselves by age four and, as such, referred her to a speech and language specialist. It seems weird to me to have her going to such a specialist as language has always been Ella's strong point but at this point it is just for an evaluation and we will see if she needs services.
Other then this we have been awash in Halloween activities. When did this get to be such an involved holiday? I swear when I was kid we went trick or treating and that was that. Now there are activities and parties everywhere I turn. It's fun but exhausting not to mention excessive with candy just everywhere I turn.
In addition to all this Halloween hoopla, Ella is also in the Nutcracker again this year. She had a blast last year and was eager to do it again. This year instead of just one part (she was a fairy last year) she has three parts—a fairy (same as last year, I guess not many four years olds signed up this year), a snow flurry (the standard five year old part), and a baby mouse (an 'extra' role that only a few of the five year olds are invited to do). The baby mouse dance is tap and the other two are ballet but they are all cute and we are happy she will be in the show more, since she's really the only reason we are there (esp. Jamie).
Thanks for reading,
Bonnie

Finally, if anyone is wondering what us stay at home moms do all day, here is the answer: we sit around and take self portraits with the kids. Hey, YOU try to fill forty hours a week with happy family friendly activities an adult, a five year old and a newborn will enjoy... Anyway, I think this shot is cute, even if Lore does look pretty nervous.
