OMG what a day....

June 15, 2006

Yesterday was oen of the worst days I can remember ever happeneing to me. Just one thing after another and it got worse and worse as the day went on! All we wanted to do was attend Brett's Aunt's funeral, in Lamar CO...about a 3 1/2-4 hour drive. It wasn't that simple though. I was proud I got Brett and the kids up and we were out the door just a bit after 7am!! So we're on the road, not actually, we had to drive over to Arvada to pick up Uncle Scooter(Brett's older brother). He was going to ride down with us. Okay...so it's 8:05am and we're on the road(officially)!!! We're making good time, got clear out to Limon(a few miles before) we get a phone call from Brett's mom and sister(they are driving seperate, our car is FULL). I guess it won't shift out or into overdrive(never got the clear story on that) but she could only go 50mp and up hills it would drop to 30mp. We left Denver about the same time, but we had to pull over and wait about an hour for them to get there. We were at a truck stop, sat out on the tailgate eating pretzels. They finally show up, jump back into the car, Scooter goes over and drives his moms car, so I get to sit in the front seat again(sitting in the middle of the middle row...not fun!!! LOL). Okay, we're crusising very slowly, it's pretty hilly and Scooter can't get his moms car above 30mp on the kills...this was going to be a l-o-n-g trip....if I only knew what laid ahead.....here comes the good part. So we come to this small town, slow down to 30pm to get through, its only maybe 4-5 blocks long......police!!!! No I need to explain a little here...we have a GMC Envoy XL, we're leasing it, it's too expensive and the plates are REALLy expensive, but it's big enough to hold all our kids, so that's what matters. So I've been driving around on expired plates since Nov 05.....I know, BAD idea. And I have no front plate because when I drove to Nebraska last year, someone stoll it at the hotel on the way home. So as were passing this cop going the opposite direction, he spies there's no plate on the front of our car. Brett keeps going and I keep watching the cop. And wouldn't you know, he flips around and gets behind us...from that point on I knew this was bad. So he gets up on our tail and notices the NOV 05 sticker staring him in the face and flips on the lights. We pull over. He comes swaying up and asks why we don't have a front plate, explain the trip to Nebraska....did we know our back plate was expired?? Of course, but for the last 4mths we've been tryign to get a home equity loan to pay some bills off and BUY PLATES. But he could care less, he isn't pleased with us at all. Takes out info and goes back to call everything in. Okay, when he comes back now he asks Brett to get out of the car....here we go! I thought he was going to arrest him. He was just talking to him, but I guess he was tellign him we can't go any further with our car, we would have to pull over and find another way to the furneral or another way back home. He told Brett if he got back into our car he would have the car impounded and he would be arrested....what???? Oh great! We are starnded! Brett's brother was ahead of us and kept going, our cell phones were not working out in the middle of nowhere and this cop was going to make sure we suffered for breakign the law! we cross the street to a gas station and stand there. We have no idea what to do, can't call anyone, went to use the pay phone but we needed to get cash, their atm was out of order......I felt like I was on the Twilight Zone! So after about 30 min, Brett's brother did turn around and come back. But what could they do, they needed to get to the funeral and she only had 2 seats left in her car, we have 6 people standing on the side of the road! Brett and Scooter wanted the kids and I to go and they would stay, but I had a bad feeling, if we seperated things were goig to get really bad...so I told them to go on ahead and Brett and I and the kids would wait and figure something out. Off they went. We stood under a tree for about an hour, but it was getting up to 103 that day and it was blowing hot dirt in everyones faces. By now Sidney and Jake were bawling. The cop kept circling a few streets away or driving by to make sure we were still stranded....we did come to find out his name was Rich.....I could have thought of a more suiting name if in deed his name was Richard! At the gas station we talked with a few locals, they confirmed that Rich was indeed a *Richard* and not a nice man. We were about 5blks from their city office, so Brett went over to see if he could buy a temp tag to just get us back home. You know that town was about as bad as they come. They wouldn't let us buy a temp tag for $6 to get us home, the office clerk told Brett we had to get the temp tag from our local office back in Broomfield(which is a crock). At this point the kids are crying, starving, dyeing of heat so I ask if we can sit inside the gas station for a bit until we figured this all out. The girls were nice, we got corndogs for the kids and sat while we thought about our next steps. It was about 1pm now(we left at 7am that morning......we were worn out). We did scrape up enough change to make a $1 long distance phone call to my mom, back in Golden! Now my mom is ALWAYS rescuing us. Usually financially, we get into trouble and mom bails us out. So I felt terrible calling her, but I knew she was our only hope of getting out of there. I call her at work and explain we are stranded, she takes down the town name(which for the life of me I can not remember anymore) and heads home to get her hubby. They have to bring both their cars because we can't fit 6 more people and carseats into one of her vehicles. So by now I know we have some hope, just about a 2 hour wait. Oh and what a wait. More locals came in for a visit(word travels fast). We had the town weirdo, he sat and told us about his restraining order and how Rich(the cop) doesn't like him much. We had a cute teenage boy(guessing about 13) talk with us and the kids....but when Brett asked him his name he relied with a *Sarah*...oy'!!! We had some town rebels offer to steal us a temp tag so we could get out of there, which was nice but I am sure Rich would throw us all into prison for that one! So we waited and waited. Just after 3pm my mom and her hubby pull into town...FINALLY!!!!! It felt no nice to know we were leaving, getting the heck out of there! Brett and I unloaded our car and he and I and Savannah piled into the truck. My mom has an old firebird and Sidney, Jake and Carson piled in with her(everyone safe in carseats). I didn't want to leave our car, because that meant we would have to come back to that horrid town, but at this point I just wanted to be home. We make the 2 hour drive home, Brett and I rocking out with Kenny(he blasts old 70's music waaaaaay to loud, poor Savannah couldn's stay asleep) and I watched my mom and my kids in front of us. Our trip isn't ove ryet, we hit Denver right at rush hour, Savannah wakes up and screams bloody murder and my mom says the kids are all fighting in her car as well....it takes us an hur to get through Denver and up to our house. We finally make it home about 6pm. Totally dirty, totally exhausted and totally beaten down. And thankfully again, my mom bails us out, loans us the money to get our plates and Brett was on the road by 9am to go get our car. He took his sister with him to drive back our car, I coudln't go because the kids and I can't all fit into Brett's demo car he drives to work. Sad thing for Brett, he'll have to make a 4hour round trip to get our car, then get home, get dressed and make a 3 hour round trip to get up to work. I feel horrible for him, I wish he could stay home today. But that was our exciting trip to a funeral that we never made it to.... I belive in Karma, but for some reason Karma has it out for us it seems. I try to make good decisions, do good things, but I am missing something somewhere because we have got some ugly bad luck, always have.
