Dr Suess's B-day...

March 2, 2007

I just got back from lunch with Jake.  I made him take cold lunch because the school was celebrating Dr Suess's b-day by serving green eggs and ham.  It was actually a sandwich, much like McDonald's except it had this rubbery green patty of egg on it, gross!!!  Anyways, he was fine, we made sure the 3 friends that sat at his nut-free table didn't eat the egg sandwich.  I stick around to eat lunch with Sidney then, and we had to move over to the reg tables.  I had to move Carosn over because oen of Sidney's friends got the egg sandwich....Carson was on my lap and Sidney spills her milk *sigh*.....so Carson and I astand the rest of lunch.  He is allergic to milk, I've never given it to him, but I'm not sure what would happen if a spill got on him.  These are all issues I will need to challenge next spring, before he starts Kidnergarten.  Actually I may get in with the allergist this summer, he'll be in preschool this fall, so I better know *how* allergic to milk he is(if it's spilled etc...).

Often times I wish my kids could just run off to school and not have to worry about this stuff.

Brett and I met with the principal Tues.  That went pretty well.  We just touched on some things(like when he walked out of the lunch line with pancakes....) then his big reaction at the school-sponsored basketball game.  She had no idea just being *next* to peanuts(and I mean next, we were about 50 feet) and we were in the bathroom ready to do the Epipen.  I think it helps them realize this is a daily battle for me, for us.  Wed I then had my 504 meeting.  That will be nice, the 504 will help Jake in that the school now needs to plan ahead to make sure he can participate.  I explained to a friend, if Jake was in a wheelchair, the school would make sure he was included, safely....severe food allergies is no different, they are considered disabled(meaning during a reaction he is disabled from caring for ones-self, walking, talking, breathing or performing manual tasks).  If the class is goign to do a lesson involving peanut shells....his 504 will insist an alternate item(a safe item) is used instead, so it is safe for Jake to be included.  After a field trip the class came back and finsished their lunch in the classroom, Jake was sent to the office because kids were eating pb&j's.  I am glad they removed him, but under the 504, the class should have gone to the lunchroom, where it is safe for Jake to eat, and be included, not isolated.  I also hope to get involved with the event planning committee...no more basketball games full of peanuts, that just was way-over the line.  In that situation, instead of handing EVERY person(there was 170 in our group) a bag of peanuts, they could have given out chips, or licorice.....they could still serve peanuts, by all means, just make it *extra* not part of the meal plan.

Anyways....then thurs night Jake was sitting on our couch(where Grandpa had been sitting the day before), Jake took off his shirt and within minutes was covered in hives and welts across his back!!  Never a dull moment is it!!!  Either Grandpa left behind some cat hair, or he was eating something prior to coming that contained peanuts(maybe a pb sadwich, pb cookie, sun flower seeds that were cross contaminated...I don't know!).  teh couch has been vacuumed and wiped down, hopefully it won't happen again.

I am going to have a heart attack, I am! This is so stressful, so very stressful.  Anyways, HUGS
