Valentine's Day....not fun with allergies!
February 14, 2007
I just got back form my sons class breakfast. The moms decided to do a pancake breakfast rather then a party int he afternoon with a bunch of sweets, which is a good idea, it is. But he can't have pancakes and I had to get up at 6am this morning to make him his own safe breakfast. I made pancakes with a safe mix and oil, applesauce and rice milk. Then his own bacon, a yogurt and some apples. Most parents wouldn't understand why I have to make his own food, but when you can react to the smallest amount of an allergen, we have to be so very careful. I actually have a rule that he can't eat anything another parent brough in. Not to be mean, but I have no idea how they handle food in their home. If the mom made a peanut butter sandwich on the counter before rolling out cookie dough, or if the knife she grabbed didn't have a little smear of pb either....or if she washed her hands between making somethgin with nuts and preparing the treat for the class....the list could go on and on. So even though it was just bacon and fruit, he can't eat it unless I made it from our home. He did fine, I just feel like the other parents are looking at me like we're a family of freaks. Then this afternoon when they hand out Valentines, there's another dangerous scenerio. he is instructed to bring all candy home, not to eat anything....so of course I will be holding my breath until I see him come out of the school later.
His teacher just called too, they want to do a counting project with those candy hearts.....I hate this, I do. Yes they don't have nuts int hem, that's obvious, but they could have been made in a plant that does process nuts. Just like plain M&M's they don't contain nuts but they are made ont he same belt as the peanut and almond M&M's....VERy dangerous. Next year I am going to try and get ALL food out of the classroom. The teacher could as easily counted plastic hearts today. Do we really want out kids maybe eating something that everyone *counted* and touched anyways, yuck!
My family has been better, they used to bring over bags of candy, M&M's usually...but no one can eat them anymore....so they've been sending money.
If curious, here is a listing of what my kdis are allergic too....it's crazy!!
Sidney-8 (beef and chocolate, grasses, molds, weeds, guinea pig & asthma)
Jake-6 (peanut, all tree nuts, eggs, trees, grasses, weeds, molds, cats, dogs,
guinea pig & eczema & asthma)
Carson-3 1/2 (milk, soy, egg, beef and pork, cats, dog, guinea pig)
Savannah-1 (milk and egg)
So you can see how stressful all these fun holiday's can be! Today is 1/2 over though, we can do this!!! HUGS
PS....I forogt, Carson had a Catscan done yesterday. He's having daily headaches....so we're awaiting the results. I am afraid he has inherited my migraines. My daughter started getting them around age 3-4 as well....I really wish that would have skipped them. :(
