Princess is Reading and Writing Now...2006

July 9, 2006

My daughter "princess" will be attending kindergarten in the fall. After much decision making we've decided it would be best for her to attend the private school she's attended for preschool for the past 3 years. This year, we entered a remarkable journey. She has began to read and write. Princess can write and spell her first and last name, is pretty fluent with reading and phonics. I cannot beleive one year ago she couldn't recognize written words and this year she can spell and sound them out. It's quite amazing to me. For me, reading is something that holds a special place in my heart. I learned how to read around ages 3/4, I grew up with six siblings and there was a teacher in the family too. My mom loved to read and I developed a love for reading too. I can devour books in short periods of time. I guess reading was always an outlet for me, growing up as the 7th child, I often felt like the only child. My sibilings are roughly 12 plus years older then I, so they were not close with me while I was growing up. One of my fondest memories is of my dearly departed mother, she was reading a book about Hiliary Clinton (whom I dislike) up until the day she passed away. This gave me a different perspective on death. When someone is dying it's customary to think of them being in a coma and not being cognizent. However, my mom was up and at em (except for her termial illness) until she passed away. It was amazing to see someone whose dying, still having the intellctuial stimuli of the written word. Currently, we've chosen to keep princess in private school for indergarten instead of allowing her to attend the cookie cutter public school here in NC. Each county is different here and where we reside they have neighborhood public schools, there are no execllerated or advanaced programs in public school. So, by chosing to keep her where she's been attending since PreK she will be given the advantage and the stimuli that she needs to succed. This school also engages the children to learn and they will have them mastering the kindergarten curriculum and reading by a first grade level by Christmas. I'm very excited about this. I think kids can learn so much through stories. Ofcourse, princess love television shows and currently is hooked on the boomerang channel and Tom and Jerry re-runs. I am gonna run now. I've been suffering from migraines the past two wekes nad i cannot seem to get rid of this current round of my migraines. Have a good July. It's finally cooled off to the mid 80's here. Yes, yanki girl is saying the 80's are cool now. Go figure. Jennifer
