Introduction

31 December 2003 – New Year’s Eve

The holidays are almost over and it’s time to return to our everyday lives. It’s kinda sad when Christmas and New Year are over, it’s such a great time of the year. I’m at work today but hopefully will get to go home early.

Our Christmas was a lot of fun and Ryan was so much more aware of everything this year. He did not wake us up until about 8am and we opened our presents under the tree. Ryan was still more interested in the wrapping paper than the actual presents, as with last year! He got some Fisher Price toys, including a school bus, Little People and some Geotrax sets and started to get so frustrated as all the toys were wired onto the cardboard. They certainly don’t want you to get into those toys easily. Mark was busily unwiring them all as quickly as possible before we had a Christmas morning melt-down!! In our garage downstairs, we had set up Ryan’s outdoor play equipment and draped and big blanket over the top so we had the grand unveiling after all the presents were opened upstairs. We have now moved it to its rightful place outside and he absolutely loves it. It should see him through quite a few summers.

We headed up to my parents’ home for Christmas dinner and even more presents. Ryan came out on top with a new police bike, clothes, table and chairs, Tonka truck and trailer and countless other bits and pieces. There is just so much ‘stuff’ in my lounge now – I think that will be one of my New Year Resolutions – to pack up some older toys and clear away all the clutter. Clutter drives me crazy and we have way too much of it in our house! Ryan is one very lucky little boy and has all sorts of toys that he loves to scatter right across the room….. we eventually left my parents’ house about 10.30pm which is of course way past Ryan’s bedtime but he did amazingly well and had energy to burn. Unlike his mum! I was SO ready to fall into bed that night but we did have a great day.

I was off work until 30th December so it has been a nice break. We’ve had my uncle visiting from England and it has been great to catch up with him especially being Christmas. He leaves Australia on 2nd January to fly to Singapore for a few days before heading back to chilly London. My parents are going to England in March and are now encouraging Mark and I to go with them, taking Ryan of course so that all my extended family can see him. We are just toying with the idea but I really don’t think we will go for a number of reasons (1) it’s very expensive (2) I don’t think I’d get enough time off work to make it worthwhile and (3) the thought of travelling for 21 hours in a plane with an active 2 year old scares me!! It’s a HUGE journey from Australia to England and I hate flying for that long on my own, let alone with a little one. There is generally only one stop-over in Singapore but it is still very tiring and I can’t imagine trying to keep Ryan entertained and comfortable on such a long flight. Any thoughts? Part of me is saying go for it, why not? But then ‘sensible me’ kicks in and says you must be crazy even contemplating it.

It is very definitely summer here now. Yesterday was an absolute STINKER, it got to about 38 degrees Celsius. I had to work in the morning and thought I might do a bit of shopping in the post Christmas sales before picking up Ryan from his carer. Uh – bad idea – it was so hot and uncomfortable, I was out there for about 15 minutes before heading back to the air conditioned comfort of the car. I collected Ryan and he was playing in just his nappy and singlet. It remained hot all evening so it was quite an uncomfortable night trying to sleep.

One of the things I was going to pick up while shopping was……………a PG test. Yes, I need to put my mind at rest. Basically I decided to come off the pill in mid November which was when I had my last period (17th to be exact). I wanted to see if not being on the pill would help with migraines which I have suffered from for some time now. It is now 31st December and still no AF. I know it can be a while for natural cycles to be established again after being on the pill but the ‘deed was done’ (ha ha!) around 30th November which is yup, exactly 14 days after AF started. DH was well aware of this and said I’d just come off the pill and it would be okay as I was yet to become regular again, or something like that. If you’ve been following my diary, you’d know my desire to have another baby so I did not care one way or the other. So it is indeed possible (but unlikely??) that I am pregnant. I would really appreciate some feedback about coming off the pill, how long it took you to become pregnant, how fertile are you after being on the pill for some time. If it is positive, I will be one happy girl but I know DH would not be all that thrilled, sad but true. It’s not as if I have ‘tricked’ him into it, he knew all along that I was no longer taking the pill. My stomach is churning with anxiety just typing all this - I am excited, nervous, scared all at once. I even read on one of the baby sites yesterday that you can be ‘super fertile’ after coming off the pill and the likelihood of twins or triplets increases dramatically if conception takes place during this time – eeekk! I intend to buy a test today and I promise I will post on my board the result so you won’t be kept hanging for too long!

Back to the real world – tonight my parents and uncle are coming over to our place for a BBQ then we will head to the waterfront/docks in Hobart which is always a very festive place at this time of year. The Sydney to Hobart yacht race started on Boxing Day and most of the yachts are in now, including some very impressive looking maxi yachts, so we will have a look at those and have a few drinks by the water on this balmy summer evening. There are fireworks at midnight of course but I think we will head home before then as I don’t think Ryan will last that long!

I’d love to hear about your New Year Resolutions! Please TTM when you get a chance. I intend to get back on the Weight Watchers wagon (I have slipped off very badly in the last few weeks, in fact I think I’ve fallen under the wheels and been run over). I really need to do something as I hate the way I look now and in this hot summer weather, it all becomes so much more apparent! I’d love to wear all those lovely summery clothes in the shops right now but not until I’ve lost about 15 kg. I know it can be done, it is all a matter of discipline. So that’s my main resolution, the other is to spend as much time with my little boy as possible. I want to make his childhood special and happy, I want him to know how much his mummy and daddy love him! I’m excited to think about how he will grow and develop in the coming year.

Well, I’d better get back to work so that I can leave earlier this afternoon!

Wishing you all a very happy, safe and wonderful 2004

Until next time
