14 October 2003

Hi everyone, hope you are all enjoying some great Autumn (or should that be Fall?) days. It’s spring here and we are having some gorgeous days – you know the ones, bright and sunny, gentle breeze, lots of blue skies but not too hot and uncomfortable. Wish it could be like this year round. I am even thinking of getting Ryan’s sun hat and sunscreen out as he loves to play outside.

TALK TO ME!
Firstly, thanks so much to all those who have stopped by my TTM board to say hello. I love getting posts and it’s great to make new friends from the other side of the world (and some a little closer). At the risk of sounding pathetic, please keep posting - I really appreciate it. It is hard to keep up with all the diaries and boards while chasing after an amazingly energetic toddler and working full time but I’m trying! Have to admit that I do spend a little too much time perusing the diaries and posting while at work – oops.

UPCOMING TIME OFF & HAIR CUTS (exciting stuff)
Life has continued to be hectic one day and crazy the next at our place. I’m looking forward to next week when I only work 3 days then have 5 off – bliss! I am planning to have some fun with Ryan and get haircuts for both of us. Ryan’s hair is not that soft fine type of hair most babies and toddlers seem to have. It is quite coarse and grows very quickly so it definitely needs taming. He wakes up most mornings with the worst little bird’s nest on the back of his head and no amount of brushing/spraying with water/coaxing will get it to sit smoothly! He’s had quite a few hair cuts in his 22 months and he handles them quite well. He sits on my lap and poor mummy ends up getting covered in blond curls. He always looks so grown up after a hair cut. I kept a few curls from his first ever hair cut, they are so cute.

BOOKS
I’m an avid reader and have a sizeable collection of books about pregnancy, childbirth, parenting and anything that has a vague connection to babies and children (my husband thinks I’m crazy and that I’ve wasted far too much money). I just love them! My favourites are (U.S./Canada readers may have no idea what I’m going on about) Baby Love – Robin Barker, The Mighty Toddler – also Robin Barker, Baby Whisperer – Tracey Hogg, Baby Whisperer for Toddlers – Tracey Hogg, Up the Duff (don’t you just love the title!) by Kaz Cooke and of course, the ‘bibles’ What to Expect………(insert whatever – I have them all!). Kaz Cooke is a very funny Australian writer who really tells it like it is. Her pregnancy book was hilarious but as well as providing a great laugh, she also provides heaps of helpful information. She has a new book out right now which is a follow-on from Up the Duff, titled Kid Wrangling – I’m hoping to score this one on my birthday this coming weekend, I’ve dropped enough hints to DH, also ‘I don’t know how she does it’ by Alison Pearson (a light-hearted look at the perils of being a working mum.

I also enjoy fiction about babies and children eg. Staying Mum by Mara Lee (to my Australian/NZ readers – I highly recommend this one!), The Nanny Diaries (sorry, can’t recall the author) and Babyville (Jane Green). Please be assured that I DO read other genres but I do enjoy a good read about babies and children!

I’ve always loved books and I have far too many compared to the number of available bookcases (ONE) so I really need to reorganise myself as I hate to pack books away in the roof where they get all dusty and smelly – books are really far too precious for that.

HOW OLD?! AND TTC?
As I mentioned, it’s my birthday on Sunday 19th. Sometimes I forget exactly how old I am (I’ll be 36 on the weekend) – I think you hit your 30’s and you try not to think of those years adding up! I know that 36 is not that ancient in the baby-making stakes, but it still worries me that I’m suddenly this age and I still want to have a baby some time! It’s not coping with the pregnancy, birth and motherhood that concerns me, it’s actually becoming pregnant. I’m reassured by the fact that yes, I’ve done this before but I was only a spring chicken of 33 when Ryan was conceived. What if I can’t do it again? Only time will tell I suppose. We’re not TTC – I would start tomorrow but I just know that DH is not that keen (sigh). The thought of NOT having another baby really makes me sad, to think that Ryan will not have a brother or sister (i.e. full time – he has a 12 year old step-sister who visits every 2nd weekend) and I will never again hold a newborn in my arms. DH would be more than happy to leave things as they are and I know I have some work to do in convincing him that another baby would be a great thing for our family. I’m almost too worried to broach the subject as I know I would be SO upset if he says he really doesn’t want to. DH had some minor surgery in August and not long after he’d been out of theatre, we were chatting about Ryan and life in general and he said something along the lines of ‘we’ll have to think about giving Ryan a brother or sister’ and we talked about what leave I had available etc etc. You can’t imagine how happy I was that day and for days afterwards. However since then he has made certain comments that tell me he really isn’t that interested – I guess it was just the anaesthetic talking after all.

RYAN, THE WATER BABY
I’m almost embarrassed to admit that up until a fortnight ago, Ryan was still having his bath in the yellow baby bath on the kitchen bench!! Of course he was way too big for it and I would lay him back in the water to rinse his hair and his legs would be hanging out over the end of the bath. And he was splash, splash, splashing all over the bench and floor – not good. The problem was we have a rather deep and big corner spa in the bathroom, no regular bath tub and I was worried about Ryan scooting away from me in that bath, plus the fact that it is very hard to lean into while kneeling on the floor. But I decided enough is enough, plonked him in the big bath and got on with it – things have been fine since then. I should have done it MONTHS ago, silly mummy. He just adores bath time now, free to splash as much as he wants to, play with his ducky and toy fish, pour water over his head with a little bucket and generally have a great time. It’s a bit tough on the back for mummy but it’s okay – so much easier than lugging, filling and emptying the ridiculous baby bath every night. Ryan does insist on pulling the plug out every few minutes which drives me mad, I tell him to stop and he just laughs at me!

BOB THE BUILDER AND ‘ME’ TIME
My little man is a huge fan of Bob so I was pleased to find out that Bob the Builder is appearing at a venue this coming Saturday – ‘on stage every hour for 30 minutes’ (Bob is going to be one TIRED builder man!). I will take Ryan in the morning, I am sure he will enjoy it. Then home for a nap, then out to visit friends in the afternoon. I always try to aim to be home around 12.30 – 1.00pm for Ryan’s nap as he is a little crankpot without it so hopefully things will work out well. He will sleep for 2-3 hours most days which is just great as he gets a good rest - oh, who am I kidding?! - it gives me a chance to do a few things, catch up on my internet time, watch a DVD, talk to a friend and generally enjoy some ME time. And of course there’s always the washing to be done, ho hum.

Well, that’s about all from us for now. Please keep those posts coming, I love to know who’s reading my diary and having a chat.

Until next time,
Sue & Ryan (11/29/01)
