The Five Moms
Christy Crandell, Julie Bermant, Hilda Morales, Becky Dyer and Blaise Brooks
By Teri Brown
BB: My passion about cough medicine abuse stems from the fact that I did not know that it was happening. I am a very involved parent, and I am very involved in my community, so it startled me when I found out about cough medicine abuse. So many people spread awareness about the obvious misuse of drugs and alcohol, but there wasn't much on a child getting high from something as common as cough medicine – it's something that most homes have in their medicine cabinets. Parents need to know about cough medicine abuse.
iP: What do your children think about your involvement with the Five Moms Project?
BB: As soon as I found out about the campaign, I spoke with my children to let them know that I was going to start spreading awareness about cough medicine abuse in our community. I also asked them several questions about abusing cough medicine. I not only wanted them to be aware that cough medicine abuse exists, but I wanted them to be aware that I know that it exists. My kids told me that they have heard of it. They told me that they never tried it, but they knew a few of their friends who had. We had a great dialogue about drug abuse and the dangers in using drugs.
iP: What would you personally like other moms to know about this topic?
BB: I feel that all moms should know about this topic. Cough medicine abuse is a hidden problem for so many parents. As a mom, I want to make sure my kids know the difference in taking a recommended dose and abuse. Moms across the nation should know that safeguarding the medicines in their homes and having a dialogue with their children about cough medicine abuse and drug abuse of any kind is the best way to keep our children safe. Let's stop cough medicine abuse Five Moms at a time.
