The Five Moms
Christy Crandell, Julie Bermant, Hilda Morales, Becky Dyer and Blaise Brooks
By Teri Brown
City/state: Hutchinson, Kan.
Occupation: Deputy Sheriff/D.A.R.E. Officer
Number of children: Adopted 4-year-old son
iP: Why are you involved in Five Moms?
BD: The companies who make cough medicines recognize that this is a growing problem, and put together a search for moms to help spread the word about this abuse. When I heard about this campaign, I knew I had to be a part of it. As a deputy sheriff, a D.A.R.E. officer in my town, I unfortunately have seen firsthand the effects cough medicine abuse can have on kids and their families. As a mom, I want to do everything I can to help prevent this from happening – not only in my community, but across the country
iP: What does the work involve day to day?
BD: Day to day, I talk to teens and parents about cough medicine abuse. I have also had the opportunity to host a town hall meeting here in Hutchinson, which brought together law enforcement, teachers, parents and the makers of the cough medicines which are being abused to talk about the problem and how we can address it locally.
iP: What would you, personally, like other moms to know about this topic?
BD: As law enforcement, we look at this type of abuse as seriously as any type of abuse problem, whether it is alcohol, medications or an illegal drug. I only hope that parents are just as concerned as we are. I ask that all parents stay involved in their children's lives, monitor their Internet usage and be the support that will be needed if their child becomes involved in substance abuse
City/state: Los Angeles, Calif.
Occupation: Accountant
Number of children: 1 daughter, 2 teen nephews
iP: Why are you so passionate about this issue?
