Pages:  1  2  3  4  5

Name: Hilda Morales
City/state: San Antonio, Texas
Occupation: Educator, Parent Support Specialist
Number of children: 4 children, several foster children

iP: Why is being involved in the Five Moms Project so important to you?

HM: I am a mom of four and have been a foster mom to several children over the years. In all these years of parenting and foster parenting, I really thought I had heard it all – but I never even imagined that teens were abusing cough medicine. I heard about the campaign through Las Comadres, an online community for Latina women, and I knew I had to be involved and help educate other parents.

iP: Why this cause? With so many issues out there that need to be addressed, why are you passionate about this one?

HM: I consider myself to be very in tune with what's going on in teens' lives, especially given my experience as a mom, foster mom and educator. If I, with all of this experience and interactions with kids, was unaware of this problem, I couldn't imagine how many other moms out there with less experience than myself were uneducated as well. Cough medicine abuse is something that can be prevented – but only if parents are aware that it's happening.

iP: Tell us a little about your own children. Do they know of the kind of work you do with Five Moms? What are their thoughts on it?

HM: My children definitely know about my involvement with Five Moms. In fact, I used my involvement with the campaign as my personal way of engaging them in a discussion about cough medicine abuse. Fortunately, they had never heard of the problem. And I'm confident that with all of the information I've given them, along with my awareness of the warning signs of abuse, this will never be an issue in my famil.
