The Five Moms
Christy Crandell, Julie Bermant, Hilda Morales, Becky Dyer and Blaise Brooks
By Teri Brown
CC: Absolutely. Our kids are looking for ways to take a stand on drug abuse of any kind but they just don't have the confidence to do that sometimes. Parents that role model this for their kids and then support their kid's efforts will go a long ways into making them feel empowered. This all starts with healthy communication between the parent and child.
City/state: Amherst, Mass.
Occupation: Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
Number of children: 1
iP: How did you get involved in the Five Moms Project?
JB: I am a pediatric nurse practitioner working in a school-based health center in inner city Springfield, Mass. I talk to kids all the time about the choices they make concerning their health. I know someone who works for the makers of cough medicines personally, and she knew about my interest in health, and, obviously, that I am a mom. I thought it was important to get this message out to the community, because even as a health provider, I didn't know how prevalent the problem is.
iP: What is the core concept of Five Moms and why do you think it can make a difference?
JB: The core is moms talking to each other. Moms do that anyway – we share stories and parenting tips. This is a way to share the dangers of cough medicine abuse with other moms, so we can all learn about the dangers and the warning signs and about prevention.
iP: What does the work involve day to day?
JB: For me, most of my conversations are with kids, rather than with moms. I talk to kids every day about choices and options and the effects of their decisions. Hopefully I encourage kids to realize that what they do does make a difference.
