Dextromethorphan, also known as DXM, is an over-the-counter cough suppressant that can produce hallucinations. DXM is a common ingredient in both liquid and tablet cough and cold medicines. Experts are still tracking the number of overdoses and deaths, but they do know the problem is growing.

Five moms, Christy Crandell, Julie Bermant, Hilda Morales, Becky Dyer and Blaise Brooks, have banded together, along with the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, a member-based association representing the leading manufacturers and distributors of nonprescription, over-the-counter medicines and nutritional supplements, to get the word out about teens and cough medicine abuse with the Five Moms Project.

Now meet the moms!

Author Mom
Name: Christy Crandell
City/state: Lincoln, Calif.
Occupation: Author, Drug Awareness Advocate
Number of children: 2 boys

iP: Tell me a little about why you got involved in this cause?

CC: I've been very active in my community about drug awareness issues since my oldest son was arrested three weeks past his 18th birthday for crimes he committed while high on cough medicine and marijuana. Through my work, I heard about this effort and wanted to be a part of it as it fit in my mission to educate parents about teen drug and alcohol use.

iP: Why this cause? With so many issues out there that need to be addressed, why are you passionate about this one?

CC: For me, it is personal. I don't want another family to experience the tragedy that my family did. I am passionate about getting the word out to as many parents as possible.

iP: Do you think teaching your children that they can make a difference in the lives of others is important? Why?
