Breathing Room
The Importance of Clean Household Air
By Mark Stackpole
Ninety percent of Earle's clients are young mothers, many of whom have been referred by their physicians. While not every household will need Earle's services, it is important for all families to be aware of the quality of their household air.
Earle provides the following clean air tips:
- Avoid using synthetic air fresheners. They are widely considered by air quality professionals to be a hazard. For a healthier alternative, use essential oils from a health food store, the aromas from which can be released using a special diffuser for light bulbs.
- Look for visible mold, water stains, condensation on windows, insects or excessive spider webs or a musty smell. These could be indicative of a problem with mold or moisture.
- As the air quality industry lacks governmental regulation and standards, it is often "let the buyer beware." Educate yourself before hiring a professional. Visit the Environmental Protection Agency for more information about clean household air.
- In some areas of the country, radon gas is a problem. Colorless, odorless and tasteless, it can lead to lung damage and cancer. Testing for radon is relatively inexpensive and highly recommended.
