What kind of response do you get when you make other personal requests such as a doctor's appointment or a family emergency? Talk to your female coworkers who have kids. What are their experiences? How did they handle their maternity leave? Who are their allies in management?

"Many times a supportive immediate manager is more important than the corporate culture," says Katepoo. When the person you answer to is flexible and understanding with your family needs, you'll probably be able to work out an arrangement that satisfies you and your employer.

What Are Your Long-term Plans?
Becoming a parent is a major life change. Just how your life will change depends on your career goals, your home life, your financial situation and possibly a number of other factors. Before you approach your boss about your pregnancy, you should consider how having a baby will affect your professional life.

You need to ask yourself if you're ready to leave your job to stay at home with your baby. Or will parenthood have a minimal effect on your career goals? Can you return to work on a part-time basis? Canyou work from home? What are your daycare options? Think through different scenarios and different options, but keep in mind that your feelings may change.
