Bellydancing as Exercise

Belly Up to Bellydancing
The first time Winger witnessed bellydancing, she immediately thought the art too complex to master. "It looked too hard. I thought I'd never be able to do that," she says.

In reality, bellydancing does not require lessons or detailed instruction. "Many movements in bellydancing are circular and very feminine," says Bidasha. "There is no need for special talent, because the movements are very natural."

"I think that bellydancing is great for health, fitness and getting in touch with your own body," says Holmes. "I do it for myself and enjoy the movements. My Turkish friends appreciate that I join in a bit more and don't feel so self-conscious about it now. Also, my midwife thinks that bellydancing is a major reason why my abdominal muscles are as good as they are in the 6th month of my pregnancy."

Learning the Art
Community centers or local fitness facilities are a good place to start when searching for a bellydancing class. However, don't despair if there are no classes in your area. You can learn to bellydance and get all the benefits of it in your own home, on your own time. There are a variety of videotapes, including those authored by the Bidasha sisters, which focus on the fitness of bellydancing.

Bellydancing is not just for the movies anymore. It is a fun, exotic way to a leaner, healthier body for anyone. "To watch a bellydancer is to be held spellbound by her exotic beauty and sultry movements," says Bidasha. "Each shimmy, graceful arm movement and beguiling stare is an expression of sensuality. Now, you can be that dancer!"
