Having It All
One Mom's Story of a Short Maternity Leave
By Susan C. Lavington
Making It Work
So what is the answer? For me, both motherhood and full-time work are fulfilling, and I truly believe that I can do both jobs well. My children will always come first, as my husband and family always have. I am fortunate to work for a company that encourages a healthy work-life balance and have supportive family and friends, so this is possible for me. I know that I'm hardly an expert mother in only six weeks and that as my girls grow and become more interactive, it will be harder and harder for me to leave them every day, but I believe that I have the right support system in place to provide them the love and nurturing they will need to grow into healthy, happy adults.
So as I sit here and stare in absolute amazement at the beautiful little people that are now a part of my life, I also look forward to my next day back in the office. I look forward to the challenges and rewards that motherhood and a career have to offer. I know it isn't right for everyone, but it is the right thing for me and for my family.
