Vitamin E

From Maternity to Menopause

Personally, I don't have to follow that advice because I already pop a vitamin E pill daily. I've had fibrocystic breast disease since I was a teen and, beginning at age 16, had undergone several surgeries to remove cysts. That used to be the standard treatment. Then, after detecting yet another cyst, my doctor, based upon some new research, suggested we try cutting caffeine out of my diet and supplementing it with vitamin E. The cyst gradually shrunk and now, years later, I've continued with that advice and have had no further cysts.

Since then, the results of various studies have been mixed as to whether vitamin E is really effective against fibrocystic breast disease or not. All I know is that it worked for me and for a friend of mine who, when she developed the same condition as a young mother, was given the same recommendation by her doctor. Let the experts argue, I'm taking my vitamin E.

Vitamin E, Naturally

Although no food can supply all the nutrients you need, which is why the medical community is recommending more supplements than ever before, it's best to try and get as much of your necessary nutrients as possible from your daily diet. Below is a list of foods that are excellent sources of vitamin E. Some of these foods are high in calories, and should be eaten in moderation. In addition, many manufacturers fortify foods like cereals with vitamin E, so always read labels to understand what you're putting in your body.

Foods High in Vitamin E
  • wheat germ
  • almonds
  • safflower oil
  • soybean oil
  • turnip greens
  • mango
  • peanuts
  • broccoli
  • pistachios
  • spinach
  • kiwi
