Mommy's Day Out
By Belinda Clarke
Exiting the spa, I was met by Patricia, manager of Nordstrom's Personal Touch Service, who had been designated to help me pick out an elegant outfit for a few weddings I had coming up. Contrary to what I initially thought, the Personal Touch personal shopping service is free to anyone, even stay-at-home moms like me on a budget. In fact, Patricia emphasized, many of her clients are moms who come in alone or in groups for Mommy's Day Outs of their own. What made me feel most at ease was the fact that I didn't feel pressured to buy anything, and Patricia pre-selected several outfits for me to try based on a few questions she asked me over the phone. To my delight, she hit the mark perfectly with a pair of flowy black pants and a burgundy and black sleeveless top. Even better, I felt like a star standing on the pedestal in my extra-large Personal Touch dressing room. Patricia even gave me a pair of nylons to use (and keep!) when trying on the outfits she selected for me. She of course was aware of the slimming effect a pair of pantyhose can have on a postpartum tummy. Me, I had forgotten what pantyhose looked like.
With new outfit in hand, I headed for the Nordstrom Caf矦or a little sustenance before my complimentary makeup application. With two weddings on the horizon, I wanted to look great, and I figured I could benefit from a mini course in makeup application. One excellent chicken Caesar salad and Diet Coke later, I was ready for my makeover.

I selected the Laura Mercier counter because I liked the neutral, understated colors on display and I had read a lot about the natural ingredients in her makeup and skin care products. I wasn't looking for a dramatic face that would prompt a "what did you do with my wife" response from my husband. Instead, I wanted a softer, more natural look. "You came to the right place," assured Linda my makeup artist, and she proceeded to give my face a smooth, flawless look. As she did her magic, she helped by giving me makeup tips, such as to always use a buttercream color on the eyelid for perfect eyes every time. She also convinced me that a slightly peachy blush is better on my fair skin than the requisite pink, which I was accustomed to using. All in all, I was happy with the result, though I can't imagine a makeup regimen that takes so many steps. She did recommend a tinted moisturizer for everyday use in place of foundation, that I was tempted to try. Instead, I opted to purchase a silky lip balm that was inexpensive and, sigh, practical.
